DNF Review for Shadows by Kristen Proby

SHADOWS
by KRISTEN PROBY

Shadows, an all-new chilling and must read paranormal romance from New York Times bestselling author Kristen Proby, is available now!

I am never alone. Not even when I am alone.

I see the unquiet dead, the souls that wander through the French Quarter.

They can’t move on, and I can’t stop seeing them.

I wear malachite for protection, and I control what I let in. It’s the only way to stay sane. Everything changes the day Cassian Winslow joins my ghost walking tour and knocks my world off its axis with green eyes the color of the stone around my neck.

An unspeakable evil is loose in New Orleans, taking young women and leaving a bloodbath in his wake. More shadows lurking for me. More unhappy dead. There might be a way to stop it.

Open myself up to Cassian.

If I do, it could spell his death.

But if I don’t, it’s mine.

DNF REVIEW

This pains me very much, but this synopsis and all the teasers leading up to the release of Shadows read like a thriller. It read like it was going to grip me and have me seeking comfort with my sheets pulled up to my nose (you're welcome for the visual) while I shook next to my husband. Uh....nope. Unfortunately, this one was most definitely a miss for me.

I like true crime novels. Have an entire shelf dedicated to them. I love the mystery that surrounds them and the depravity that is found in the human mind. That always makes me want to see things deeper, heavier, understand more of the 'why' aspect of said depravity. So when this one came out and the foreword told me to make sure the lights were on - I was seriously giddy for a very welcome thriller-type read from Kristen Proby. But, again - nope.

Some inconsistencies. Some eyebrow raising moments of huh were in there. Like, how can you not believe in past lives? YOU see ghosts/apparitions, your sister is psychic and a witch, while your other sister is psychometric. Uh, do you hear yourself?? I don't understand it. That seriously made NO sense to me. Not one lick of it.

This was not scary. This wasn't even creepy. It honestly felt like a mixture of children's stories like Goosebumps and Sweet Valley High girls. All sweet and somber, but oooh - some paranormal activity *giggle*. That's what I felt and I wanted so much more. Something grittier, heavier, or even scarier. Gory? Just something that made this worth the mystery that's been surrounding it since I heard about it.

Instead, I got a fluffy insta-love that didn't have any depth within the actual story - all surface story without background, no build-up to the feelings that the characters were feeling (we found out later why Cash and Brielle felt as strongly as they did), and lackluster craziness from "HIM" that did nothing more than add a cringe-worthy side to a madman.

Kristen's writing started out fun in this one, I won't lie - but I just don't think it was the style that worked for this genre. For me. She's a light read in general, but I was hoping for more grit and depth with this trope/genre. I'm still a wet-behind-the-ears PNR reader, so it was a somewhat new experience for me and so the excitement for the possibility of goosebumps had me rushing toward this one. This just wasn't my cup of tea. While it started out great, it just didn't keep up for me and as much as I wanted to love it, I just couldn't. I'm so sad this didn't work because the idea of it was full of promise for me.
