REVIEW: 5 Heartbreaking Stars
"I should have known, kissing you once would never be enough."

*~* SPOILER FREE REVIEW *~*

There are only a handful of books that I've been able to open up and feel an immediate emotional connection to within the first two paragraphs. Any author that can emote a story so heavily with just their words is an author that’s going to give me a story I want to explore deeper. A couple I know I need to meet. A love I desperately need to experience. That’s exactly what I got with Even if it Hurts by Marni Mann. Immediately upon jumping in, her words painted a picture as an amazing love emerged. Absolutely breathtaking.

But also heartbreaking.

You know those books we all feel so lucky to fall into? The ones that tell a story that catches our breath and moves our hearts? Well, it was my turn. I fell and I fell hard. The love in this book was one that spanned years, surpassed logic, and defied common sense of the heart and mind. But that can't and won't negate the intensity of the topic at hand, nor will it go down easily with others.

I realize that many people are going to struggle with this one, and rightfully so - it's not an easy subject to accept, but I also know it’s not my story to judge. It’s my chance to live and feel emotions that were so extraordinarily told within a heart that was tangled up between two men, and I very definitely did. I liked that it wasn't black and white. I liked that it wasn't easily spelled out. I loved that it was honest emotions fighting moral responsibility. That internal battle that pulled at my heartstrings and lead me through a very emotional and passionate story wasn't told with ease, but with a pain that radiated throughout the pages. This one hurt my heart. I felt the turmoil. I had tears in my eyes at one point. It wasn't an easy journey, but it was an impactful one.

I got completely caught up watching Chloe discover not only a new world, but discovering love in it's purest form as well. Unhindered and without borders, love can make your eyes dance and your heart skip a beat. That's exactly how I felt as I watched Chloe fall in love for the first time. When her circumstances changed, which added a new dynamic to her story, that allowed me to witness an emotion that I've never personally known as her heart struggled to gain purchase on what was right for her. That journey was what it was all about, and I feel like Mann nailed it with this story. Emotionally heavy, but superb in every way.

Having said that, this is exactly why a triangle is my favorite trope. It is heartbreaking. It is going to piss people off and cause some very lively discussion (my favorite part!!). But I love the exploration of a love that isn't easily explained. Hearts held captive by a love that is more powerful than they are? Yes, please!! Give me a love the characters are powerless to stop any day of the week. I want that hiccup in my breath. I want that lurch in my chest. I want that drop in the pit of my stomach. It is a polarizing topic, but that’s why I enjoy it so much. There is so much to discover about this type of love....what pushes someone to their emotional wits' end? Why does the heart fight logic? I love that Marni Mann explored this issue with the depth that she did.

Her characters were relatable and I connected easily with them individually; all showing a growth and a depth that made them equally perfect in their own right.

Oliver - fun, loving, sweet, charming, caring, the most perfect smile to give an air of comfort. He had me smiling so much, but he also had me melting in my seat as I watched him strip down his emotions and bare himself with an intensity that would easily keep me planted. He had my heart the minute he smiled and whispered in her ear from behind, giving me all the goosebumps and giggles.

Lance - alpha, mysterious, deep, impatient, strong. He knew what he wanted and had no problems going after it, no matter the consequences. He also had everything at his fingertips and spared no expense in spoiling Chloe, which allowed for a very fast and carefree relationship without a worry in the world. It lent an air of freedom from the heaviness she was dealing with. An undeniable security in a love that was strong.

Chloe - determined, smart, beautiful, detailed. Living this book through her vantage point allowed me an insight into her thinking and her heart, so when I saw her struggle - I struggled too. I read this entire book like I was put in her heart and her mind.... so I felt that same pain. I was conflicted like she was. I was living in her world, spectator or not, but I know I felt every facet of this book.

It was all about getting into these characters' heads, their emotions, and feeling that anxiety that came with decisions that needed to be made and I will admit, they were not easy decisions. I feel like this story was emotionally driven and that never let up. I felt and understood the pull as well as the anger for the actions taken. It was written so well and I felt every single thing. It’s these types of reads that make me scream from the rooftops because the discussion that follows is one that is so impassioned and intense. I’m not here to excuse actions. I’m here to understand emotions. I’m here to feel the decisions and the repercussions.

It was romantic and exciting.
It was amazing but heartbreaking.
It was sensual and hot.
It was brutal but genuine.
It was sexy and tantalizing.
It was realistic but devastating.
It was perfection.

Beautiful(ly) torture(some). I love when a book moves me like this and makes me feel as much as I did. This was nothing short of amazing for me and is sitting as a Top Favorite for 2020 already. This will be recommended often as a Must Read. Marni Mann is fast becoming one of my go-to authors for truthful, emotionally charged, life changing stories. I don't think this story will ever leave me...

"I don't like missing you, Chloe."

Excerpt for The Life That Mattered by Jewel E Ann

~EXCERPT~

Graham flew to Vancouver three days earlier, so I had Lila all to myself for the flight and the drive to the hotel—Porter Suites. Imagine that.

“Baby!” Lila hurled herself into Graham’s arms as soon as he opened the door to the suite.

He winked at me over her shoulder.

“Graham Cracker.” I rolled my eyes.

After Lila rushed past him, he tipped the bellboy, watching him retreat toward the elevator for a few seconds before returning his attention to me. “So you don’t have to listen to her scream.” Graham handed me a keycard.

“Hmm … she’s never mentioned screaming. You must be referencing a movie, not actual events.” I plucked the keycard from his manicured fingers.

“I’m throwing my hat in the gubernatorial race next year. You realize you’ll have to address me with a little more respect when that happens.”

I brushed past Graham in his pinstriped suit, potent cologne, and over-gelled coal hair—parted perfectly on the side like the preppy guy he’d always been. Lila glued herself to my existence in kindergarten, but Graham wormed his way into our circle of friends in college. He campaigned for the role of my boyfriend for two whole weeks.

Flowers.

Expensive jewelry.

Plagiarized love letters—mostly William Wordsworth and Lord Byron.

I refrained from calling him out on his romantic poems and sonnets because the thought did count, although he lost a few points by assuming my love of science meant I knew nothing about literature.

We discovered our attraction wasn’t as physical as it was born of our mutual love for sports. My vagina stood in the way. He thought our shared interests plus his owning a penis and my owning a vagina equaled a match made in heaven.

As for Lila … well, she hated him for years.

“This place is quite fancy-pants, Graham Cracker. Or should I start calling you Governor Graham Cracker?”

The suite showcased a stunning view of the coastal mountains and water’s edge from the top level of the hotel nestled in the heart of downtown Vancouver. I suppressed a gasp to prevent feeding Graham’s ego. In fact, I went out of my way to bulldoze his ego at every opportunity.

Book Review and Giveaway for Ruthless Knight by Ashley Jade

Welcome to their kingdom.

Cole Covington is the most popular heartbreaker at school.
Every guy wants to be him and every girl wants to screw him.
Except me.
His devastatingly good looks, golden arm, and flirty smiles don't do it for me anymore...because I know what's lurking underneath the star quarterback's gorgeous armor.

At least I thought I did.

Sometimes the most beautiful people...hide the ugliest truths.
And sometimes the only way to save someone...
is to walk beside them through hell.

Sawyer Church is the bible-thumping nerd of Royal Hearts Academy.
Girls pick on her and guys don't notice her.
Except me.
Sweet, curvy, and sarcastic, she's impossible to ignore.
No matter how much I try.
Everyone at school has her pegged as the chubby, Jesus loving geek, but unlike them—Sawyer's real and never pretends to be someone she's not.

Until I ask her to be my fake girlfriend.

Sometimes the most beautiful souls...hide the greatest pain.
And sometimes the only way to save someone...
is to fight for them.

REVIEW: 4 STARS
"She tastes like innocence and fire...an intoxicating combination if there ever was one."

After reading Cruel Prince, I was extremely excited to check out Cole and Sawyer's twisted story - definitely an anticipation that ramped us as the release date came closer. Their dynamic in that first book made me smile, but I knew there was something a little more sinister boiling behind Cole's outward persona. His popularity was a facade that had a heavily barricaded heart and a very troubled and heartbreaking past. This was an eye opening and self-deprecating, emotional read that wasn't one I could barrel through. This was a time consuming read between the background that was built into their comeuppance and the variables that were strewn about because of their emotional wounds. Two very troubled kids for very different reasons.... but they found solace in each other.

Going into this book, I knew there was going to be some depth to discover with Cole and the way he handled not only himself, but also how he reacted to everyone else around him. I honestly loved Cole’s intensity. He had so many unexpected layers. Jade gave his struggle so much "personality" and reality, so I could appreciate he wasn't one dimensional. Was he a little predictable in his self-loathing, given what happened? Sure, but Jade explored a very real subject and allowed the anger and the pain to manifest into this beast that he had no control over. I loved the way he fought everything. Hot-headed punk with a heart that needed some love - but he was a a stubborn punk in every right, too. Pride is a two headed monster. On one side, it’s good because it keeps your head up and goals centered. On the other, you’re too damn stubborn to see what’s right in front of you and willing to accept it.

"You're addicting, Bible Thumper. But you're my addiction."

Sawyer was the same spit-fire she was in the first book, but she had me giggling quite a few times. She was sarcastic and had some times where she was absolutely clever with her comebacks and that had me loving her strength even more - most appreciatively, their banter was on point. However, I want to address Sawyer's character, because I feel like that will be a point of contention for many - but I also think that a bigger picture will be missed if there isn't an understanding placed with the reader. I loved the problems she had and I love that Jade gave her struggles page time, because they are very real struggles. The aggravation I saw and the pain I felt from her, I loved that her story was told the way it was. It's not the same for everyone and this one was very definitely a different narrative than what I have read in the past and I enjoyed that so much.

One thing that resonated with me was I found myself constantly contemplating the drama that was weaved throughout the pages. Not only did Jade give me the normal teenaged drama while adding some liberties with other high school drama, she showcased how messed up a teenagers life can be and made it very age appropriate. Something seemingly inconsequential was blown out of proportion - fittingly so. And even though looking from the outside in, it looks like a dream - that added another layer of misleading deception. I love how she portrayed their problems, especially in the way most teenagers see small problems and how things can escalate farther than they imagined. Some things didn't line up with some of the variables (money and "problems"), but it mostly gave a little push for everything to work itself out. The give and take was probably one of my favorite parts of this story and I feel like it was paced aptly.

While it was overwhelmingly long, the story did progress and never really felt stagnant. There was almost enough recap of the first book that didn’t have anything to do with this book that could have easily been cut giving us less pages to peruse, but it wasn’t a negative hindrance to the story - it just added unnecessary length. Given everything Cole and Sawyer went through, their story was the main focus and that's what I wanted to concentrate on - so sometimes the outside reminders of what happened in Cruel Prince didn't directly affect the scene at hand, and while it was a great recap, I didn't think it was entirely necessary. But, like I said - I don't think this book ever stalled for me and I couldn't put it down. I enjoyed it immensely - crazy drama and all.

Pain does not negate love. Sometimes, they’re one in the same. <-- I couldn't help but think that the entire time I read this book. My words, not Jade's, but they kept coming out while I read it because she allowed me to feel a sense of despondency and elation as each battle emerged and was fought. The strength in Cole and Sawyer's attachment felt real and they were bonded on a deeper level than I initially imagined.

I am looking forward to getting this one signed and setting it on my shelf next to my copy of Cruel Prince. I enjoyed the first book, but this second book swept me up in a hailstorm of pain and vitriol, popularity and pride. But the end result being a love that wasn't easily won but was most definitely deserved.

"How come lies are so beautiful and the truth is always so fucking ugly?"

Excerpt for Slow Dancing by Stylo Fantome

~EXCERPT~

Woods's voice was suddenly behind her, startling her.

“Why do you always sneak up on me?” she demanded, not able to keep the grin from her face. He beckoned her with one finger, and she swayed into him, her body moving to the music. Closed her eyes as she remembered their dance from the beach.

“Because I like to see you blush,” he replied, one arm coiling around her waist as he moved in rhythm with her.

“Mean man, that's not very nice,” she laughed, looking up at him again.

“I'm not a very nice man.”

She snorted. The tequila was rolling around in her brain, making her feel loose. Bold.

“No, you're not, are you? You're a tease.”

“A tease?” his eyebrows shot up. “Explain, please.”

“You. Sneaking up on me, talking to me the way you do.”

“And how do I talk to you, hmmm?” He raised a beer bottle to his lips – she hadn't even realized he'd had one in his free hand.

“You talk to me like ...” she tried to think through the tequila fog.
“Like you know me. Like you know secrets about me, and you're keeping them from me.”

“Maybe I do,” Woods challenged before necking the rest of his beer. She watched the tendons in his neck stretch and pull taut. Ridiculously wanted to place her tongue against them.

“And what secrets do you know, pray tell?” she asked, loosely wrapping her arms around his shoulders as a slow song came on.

“I know a lot of things.”

“I think you're full of shit,” she called him out. “I think you just like to tease people. Poor Jeremy.”

“I didn't once tease Jeremy,” Woods corrected her. “If you asked him, I think you would find that he was highly, and often, fulfilled.”

“Fulfilled? Or just filled?” she joked before she could stop herself.

“Ooohhh, I think I'm going to like drunk-you very much,” his voice was low as he laughed at her response.

“And none of that is a secret – everyone knew you two were sleeping together. I don't think you know any secrets, Woods Donahue,” she said.

He pulled her in tight to him, pressed his mouth to her ear.

“I know some things,” he breathed. “I know you look at me when you think I'm not looking at you. I know you wonder what it was like between Jeremy and me. But mostly, you wonder what it would be like between you and me.”

Her temperature skyrocketed and she felt like she couldn't breathe. Forget blushing, she was on fire, and she couldn't decide if she wanted to run away, or cry, or strip. Possibly some combination of all three.

Crazy woman from a remote location in Alaska (where the need for a creative mind is a necessity!), I have been writing since ... forever? Yeah, that sounds about right. I have been told that I remind people of Lucille Ball - I also see shades of Jennifer Saunders, and Denis Leary. So basically, I laugh a lot, I'm clumsy a lot, and I say the F-word A LOT.

I like dogs more than I like most people, and I don't trust anyone who doesn't drink. No, I do not live in an igloo, and no, the sun does not set for six months out of the year, there's your Alaska lesson for the day. Yeah. I think that about sums me up.

Excerpt for Treyton by J Nathan

~EXCERPT~

Trey jolted up in his seat and strained to hear something. “Listen.”

“What?”

“I love this song.”

I listened, recognizing Cankor’s most popular rock ballad, “Symphony.” “Then why aren’t you watching their set?”

He stood and extended his hand out to me. “I needed someone to dance with.”

I stared at his hand, wondering how he always just knew the right thing to say. But I wasn’t one of the groupies who’d do anything he asked. “I’m not dancing.”

“Scared?”

My eyes lifted to his. “Of what?”

His cocky smirk slipped into place. “I think you know.”

There was one thing I did know for sure. Dancing with Trey was a bad idea. I knew it with every fiber of my being. I was in a relationship—a rapidly deteriorating relationship, but a relationship nonetheless. I was lonely. And I was starved for any kind of attention. Those combined made for some serious lapses in judgment.

I reached out my hand. Trey grasped hold of it. His grip was warm and strong as it closed over mine. A tremor rushed up my arm.

Dammit.

He yanked my hand, jerking me to my feet.

I laughed, not expecting him to be so strong.

He smiled down at me.

“What are you smiling at?” I asked.

“You never laugh.”

I considered what he said and realized he was right. “I don’t usually have a reason to.”

His lips twisted regrettably as he gently pulled me into him. He slipped his other hand around to my lower back. The motion left a trail of numbness in its wake, and I hated that I needed the contact more than I realized. I didn’t know what to do. Where to look. What to say.

Trey moved us to the song playing in the distance.

I rested my cheek against his shoulder. Was this really happening? Were Trey and I really dancing in a parking lot? His woodsy scent consumed every one of my breaths as I felt myself slowly getting lost in his embrace. He was built, sexy as hell, and he held me like he wanted me in his arms. And I had no idea what to do with that notion.

The soft sound of his humming filled my ears as we moved to the music. I hadn’t been in anyone’s arms but Keith’s in over a year. This felt different. Forbidden. Risky.

“You still with your man?” Trey asked, his raspy voice sending a tremble through me.

I wondered if he felt the speeding of my heart. “Not sure.”

“Why’s that?”

“He saw some pictures Aubrey posted.”

“He’s not happy?”

“He’s not happy I was happy,” I explained.

He scoffed.

“Well, he’s not gonna ruin my fun or tell me what I can do.”

“That’s the Brie I know.”

“Is it? Because I’m starting not to know who she is anymore.”

Excerpt Reveal for Ruthless Knight by Ashley Jade

~EXCERPT~

I open my mouth to speak, but Bianca beats me to it.

“In Cole’s defense, he told me not to hook up with any guys. He never said anything about girls, though.” Smirking, she adds, “Plus, it’s not like he was there. He was too busy hanging out with his new girlfriend, Sawyer.”

On second thought, maybe locking her up in the basement isn’t such a bad idea after all. There would be way less shit for her to stir up from down there.

I can tell the exact moment Jace processes what she said because the little vein in his forehead makes an appearance. “Sawyer? As in Dylan’s best friend, Sawyer?”

“Do you know any other Sawyers?”

“I told you to stay away from her.”

“You also told me not to fuck Mrs. Bennett, but she ended up giving me an A in history.”

“Holy shit. You fucked Cortland’s mom?” Bianca exclaims.

We both ignore her.

“Look,” Jace starts. “Dylan doesn’t want you hanging around Sawyer. Not after what you did to her.”

“I’m sorry, last I checked, I’m a big boy and Dylan doesn’t get to make decisions for me.”

“Yeah,” Bianca cheers.

Jace’s gaze swings her way. “Go upstairs.”

“Whatever.” She fixes her stare on Oakley. “I’m gonna call ***** and see if she wants to hang out.”

Oakley makes a low growling sound as she scampers away. When she’s out of earshot, he says, “***** is a sweet girl, Jace. You need to put an end to that shit.”

Huffing out a breath, Jace motions to me. “Yeah, after I put out the other fire.”

“Me dating Sawyer isn’t a fire.”

It’s a motherfucking atomic bomb.

Welcome to their kingdom...

I never thought I'd step foot in Royal Manor again.
But four years later, here I am...back to finish my senior year at Royal Hearts Academy.

And forced to face Jace Covington.
My first friend. First crush. First kiss.
The one I left behind.

Only—he isn't the same boy I gave my heart to.

This new Jace is as cruel as he is gorgeous.
And he's determined to make my life a living hell.
Along with the rest of his glorified family and crew of tyrants.

They expect me to worship the ground they walk on like everyone else, but I'd rather eat dirt.

If Jace Covington wants me gone...he'll have to try harder.
Because I've never been the kind of girl to play by the rules.

This is book 3 in the Royal Hearts Academy series. Please note: Although this is Bianca's book, Cruel Prince (Jace and Dylan’s book) and Ruthless Knight (Cole and Sawyer's book) should be read first for a better understanding of the family dynamic and to avoid spoilers.

WARNING: Royal Hearts Academy is a New Adult/High School series of standalones filled with drama, a touch of angst, and boys who are bad to the bone. And when I say bad, I mean they are assholes with a capital A. If you're looking for a safe, sweet romance, this series is NOT for you. At all! Please don't say you weren't warned.

Ashley Jade loves to tackle different genres and tropes within romance. Her first loves are New Adult Romance and Romantic Suspense, but she also writes everything in between including: contemporary romance, erotica, and dark romance. Her characters are flawed and complex, and chances are you will hate them before you fall head over heels in love with them.

She’s a die-hard lover of oxford commas, em dashes, music, coffee, and anything thought provoking…except for math.

Books make her heart beat faster and writing makes her soul come alive. She’s always read books growing up and scribbled stories in her journal, and after having a strange dream one night; she decided to just go for it and publish her first series.

It was the best decision she ever made.

If she’s not paying off student loan debt, working, or writing a novel—you can usually find her listening to music, hanging out with her readers online, and pondering the meaning of life.

Check out her amazon page and Facebook page for future novels. She recently became hip and joined Twitter, so you can find her there, too. She loves connecting with her readers—they make her world go round’.
