Book Review and Giveaway for Block Shot by Kennedy Ryan

BLOCK SHOT
by KENNEDY RYAN

JARED

If I had a dollar for every time Banner Morales made my heart skip a beat...
The heart everyone assumes is frozen over.
Her anger is...arousing.
Every glare from those fire-spitting eyes, every time she grits her teeth, gets me...well, you know.
If I had a dollar for every time she's put me in my place, I'd be an even richer man.
I'm a successful sports agent because I assume "no" means you'll think about it.
I'm sure what you meant to say is "Coming right up.”
They say even rich men don't always get what they want, but those men don't know how to play the game. The trick is to keep them guessing.
Take Banner. She assumes she's winning, but this game?
She doesn't even know how to play.

BANNER

If I had a dollar for every time Jared Foster broke my heart, I’d have exactly one dollar.
One night. One epic fail. One dollar...and I'm out.
I've moved on.
I’ve found success in a field ruled by men.
Anything they can do, I have done better.
They can keep the field while I call the shots, blocking them when I have to.
And Jared has the nerve to think he gets a second chance?
Boy, please. Go sit down. Have several seats.
I'll just be over here ignoring the man carved from my fantasies with a lust-tipped chisel.
Oh, I didn't say the struggle wasn't real.
But I've got that one dollar, and Jared won't have me.

REVIEW: 5 Stars
"She's a storm I can't find the eye of."

Much anticipated, highly recommended, Kennedy Ryan does not disappoint with yet another book in her HOOPS series. With diverse characters, real subjects, and true emotion, she will take you on a journey that will make you feel and yearn for that first true love, the one that got away that you never forgot. The kind that breaks your heart repeatedly and yet, you let them because you're powerless against them.

In one simple word: WOAH. I thought I knew what Kennedy is capable of....but yet, she hands me this? I mean, emotional? Yes! Intense? Obviously. Heartbreaking? Gut-wrenching? Tumultuous? Check. Check. Check. Not only was it signature Kennedy writing with a thought provoking storyline, but it was a story that brought me to my knees because I cannot imagine being in this predicament. I couldn't imagine the heart that Banner has and yet I've met her in Kennedy. A positivity and a strength that not many possess. Her conviction in herself was beautiful, even though she needed reminding sometimes. And Jared? I loved his determination and his strength - his tenacity, with a bold no fucks given attitude. Ruthless? Suited for the world he thrived in. He never ever let anyone stand in the way of what he knew was his. Distance, time, or other people be damned. No one's opinion mattered but his own, and that tenacity made him that much sexier.

Her characters aren't just words on a page. No, they're people...they're YOU and ME, insecurities and all. I love the depth and the realism she gives to them. She makes them relatable, and I am pretty sure that's what makes me fall for her stories every single time. She gives a voice to a very real insecurity that resides in many of us, and it was very easy to feel the pain, the torture that comes along with it. I'm so impressed that every one of her stories is the same, only different. What? I know, crazy, right? The same as in they are epic, emotional journeys and they always have a deep, underlying message, but different because you have never read a story executed this well with this storyline. Ever. Her originality shines bright in not only her characters, but also in the way she brings to life a love that was meant to be and impossible to fight. It was sensual, it was intense, it was determined. It was necessary...

"If this bed is our battlefield, we are two white flags surrendering to the demands of the other."

There is a passage in here that perfectly describes what I look for in a man with a self-described aversion to relationships. When 'that girl' come around, your whole world shifts and it's different. Colors are brighter, sound is crisper, days are sunnier....that sort of thing. Her words, they sweep you away. They move you, with you, wrap you up in them. I wish I could explain them without sounding like I'm a mental case, but there is a reason she is a favorite of mine, and the kind of author I make room for no.matter.what. Like, she is couch discussion worthy. Once again, Kennedy has pushed boundaries and moved mountains. I love when she tackles social issues because she does it with class. She does it with ease. She does it with understanding.

This is the type of author I hold up other books to, ones I compare all others to. I love the way she emotes. I love her flow. I love the ease of conversation between her characters and the storyline continuity. That's what I like....actually, that's what I love in an author. I'm not even going to pretend that she's not one of my favorite authors, or deny that she can write any story and I'm going to love it. Sure, call me biased, but I've read every one of her books and have loved them all. It never ceases to amaze me with how well she can evoke feelings in a storyline that isn't always a favorite trope for some, but this second chance romance is my favorite kind of all.

I was antsy and fidgety as I read this one and I didn't want to finish because then I knew it would be over....and I would be left with a want, a need for more. Potentially sad. Definitely hungover. A love like this is a once in a lifetime love and being able to read it in this capacity always makes me smile. I wanted what Jared did. I worried for what Banner's heart could endure. I desire/crave/love an alpha like this that can literally bring me to the edge of my seat while reading it. Jared, he's going to be on my mind for a long time. Banner's heart will stay with me for a long time. I love how she embodied these characters and I want you to know that not only is this cover shelf-worthy, but it was completely fitting. That was Jared 100%. I will admit that I loved every single facet of this book except for that one 'condition'....yet, as it played out, I could see where it was going and why. Calculating men, I will say that much.

Her books inspire my reviews, but I can only wish I had 1/100th of her word sense. It amazes me the way she strings them together to create such beautiful and intense love stories. Her perfectly placed words are what my reviewer dreams are made of. I enjoy these kinds of gut-wrenching stories that makes me wish against proper, hope against morals....crave the forbidden. I love the emotional battle I get by trying to understand both sides of this passionate war that is being fought, and this time she made me see more than I bargained for. I love her for it. I will blindly follow her. just to get a taste of more of her words.

"There's a savagery in our kisses born of desire long denied."

Book Review for Everything I Never Wanted by K Street

EVERYTHING I NEVER WANTED
by K STREET

A single dad, contemporary romance standalone.

This wasn’t supposed to be my life.

One phone call was all it took to bring me back to the small town I had grown up in. Everything had changed, and staying away was no longer an option.

Four and a half years later, I was a widowed single father still here, still trying to pick up the pieces. We were doing just fine on our own, my little girl and me.

At least, we were until Camryn Parker stumbled into our lives. The woman was like a tornado after a hurricane; she was the storm I never saw approaching. Behind her beauty and sarcastic wit, she was just as broken as I pretended not to be. As hard as I tried to resist, it was impossible not to fall in love with her.

In the end, it took nearly losing it all for me to realize everything I never wanted was exactly what I needed.

REVIEW: 3 STARS
"You don't get to choose your hand, but you can decide how to play the cards."

For my first K Street book, I was pleasantly surprised. For someone that doesn't read a lot of cutesy, sweet books, I immediately fell in love with her characters and was enjoying the storyline. I also read select few single daddy books because I am always afraid the story may not live up to my expectations from what I have read and loved previously, but I usually love the sound of them because there is nothing sexier than a man handling his business. While this book embodied the sweetness of a man not sure that he can love again, it was also a very temperate read. Not overly emotional, and with zero angst, it was definitely not one with any turmoil - but it was a good read. I'm glad I read it because not only did I get a good read, but I got to hear a new-to-me author's voice as well. But for as sweet as it was, it was also anticlimactic and slow in some parts for me. Not bad, just wasn't the emotional and deep book I was hoping for given the subject matter at hand.

This book isn't exactly the kind of read, for me, that I can shout from the rooftops about how emotionally challenging it was because it just....wasn't. It was a sweet vacation read, a light in the feels department kind of read; one that you don't necessarily have to read all in one sitting because you are busy and running around, but you can pick it right back up and start reading again. It was an easy read with enough activity to keep the story moving along, but not enough nail-biting turmoil to suck you in and make you have to follow along closely so you don't miss anything. Just.....easy.

I do feel like the chance to embellish a little more on some of the storyline arcs that she threw in there was a missed opportunity. We met secondary characters and went into great detail with them and spent a good amount of time building their character, yet their reason for being a part of the story wasn't entirely relevant, leading me to believe they weren't really necessary to the storyline. But with the character building, I also feel like I missed out on some good story building as well. I mean, I don't need to read that you added the water and oil, and then cracked two eggs to mix it in the batter to make cupcakes (super descriptive break down of events) and then in another part, we missed some imperative scenes that led up to certain events because we jumped an entire month later in their story but we didn't get that emotional buildup to it (super NON descriptive brush over of events). Yet, for instance in other parts, it's almost as if the buildup to, let's say, the big secret was not indicative of the actual secret we were told, so I felt a little harumph about it after it was all said and done too.

I loved Tucker and his personality, and the fact that he was a standup man was not lost on me. While he was a good and worthy man, one part threw me off and it made me squint my eyes at him hardcore. I was none too pleased with him and his mouth. Not only did that happen at the very end, but it cleared up quite expeditiously and I was left shaking my head as to where the craving came from, the need to be back together. The ache to hold her and love her and feel her....and kiss her. I wanted that grit. I wanted that pull...and I just didn't feel it. Again, some parts were super developed and explained, and then others were glossed over, leaving so many questions. This ending being one of them.

Camryn had such a good disposition to her, especially with kids. She was such a natural, so with her being in the position she was in, it wasn't so far fetched and it really rounded out her character. She had her walls, but it wasn't anything that was touched on in great depth.

Kids in books are not a favorite of mine in general, but I was actually pleasantly surprised. Sometimes they are over exaggerated, and sometimes the author hides behind the cutesy side to to help carry the story. While Shayne did help, she wasn't the only entertainment for the book. Shayne has to be my favorite kid from a book in a while. She was definitely cute, but even though she was a significant part of the story, there were parts without her too and I liked those parts just as well.

Overall, some of this felt predictable, but it was an extremely sweet and smile-worthy read. I know this reads as one long complaint about the book, but I assure you it is not. I liked her characters, the story (besides the grrrr part), it was really cute to read, and the flow was easy to follow. Again, light and airy read with zero angst/turmoil. So if you are looking for a quick and easy, sweet and lovey-dovey read, this one is a good option! It wasn't bad, it wasn't my favorite...it was just good.

Book Review and Giveaway for Timid by Devney Perry

TIMID
by DEVNEY PERRY

Willa Doon has always been shy. Her quiet demeanor was something she’s always embraced. That is, until Jackson Page moves to town. The one man she desperately wants to take notice struggles to remember her name.

Year after year, Willa stands by, watching as the bartender slash playboy drowns his demons in beer and sex. Then one night, he shows up at her door, suddenly aware that the girl he’s seen around Lark Cove is now a beautiful woman.

Except what he doesn’t remember is that this visit isn’t his first. They spent a night together once before. A night he’s forgotten, thanks to a bottle of tequila.

A night that crushed a timid girl’s heart, and set a broken man on the path to heal them both.

REVIEW: 3.5 STARS
"I was her dream and she was mine."

After reading Tattered and loving it, I was doubly excited for Timid because I just knew that Willa and Jackson had a story to tell. I loved how Perry wove the first book into this one, because their stories happened simultaneously, so it was a nice overlap, but she didn't do it too much that it made me feel like the narrative was on repeat. A peek into Logan and Thea's world and what was going on with Charlie was definitely a bonus for me. I loved visiting with them throughout the book.

Willa was a very independent, but also very shy young lady that didn't necessarily have a bold bone in her body. She went with the flow and was very easy-going. But if you looked deep within, there was a certain strength to her insecurity and her innocence had a sort of...sass to it. So, mix some shyness with some sassy and you have Willa. However, at times she almost felt like the had the emotional level of a very self conscious 15 year old girl while having the structure and mentality of a very organized businesswoman. I had a hard time reconciling those two personalities in the beginning, but she grew on me. It didn't bother me that she was shy or timid (I'm so going to say that a million times because that's the perfect word for her), because growing up in Lark Cove, she really was the true definition of a small town girl. She was very naïve in some ways and that added to the purity of her innocence, but it also made me <sigh> a few times knowing that as a grown adult, that's not how I would have handled things. But again, knowing she was a timid, sweet gal in a very small town, it worked for her.

Jackson was portrayed one way, but his inner demons showed another side to him. I liked the complexity of his character and the way he had to work through his self-doubt, but I also wanted to shake him and ask him why he thought 'that' way!! I really liked seeing him finally realize who Willa was and subsequently falling for her. He had some twists thrown at him, and nothing I would have ever guessed, but with a little (read: A LOT) of help from Willa, seeing his character grow was definitely the reward in this book. His struggles were honestly the most heartfelt part about the book for me.

While Jackson and Willa had a worthy story to tell, it took a long while for me to settle into it, and that made me quite sad. It was rather odd for me because I was easily enjoying the story, but something just wasn't clicking for me. It took me until right around the 70% mark to actually settle in. I want to stress the fact that I enjoyed the book very much, but I wasn't immediately enamored with it. I guess this one was just a little more on the slower and sweeter side for me than I had anticipated. All in all, this was a very sweet story of where there's a will, there's a way. Love was going to find a way amongst all the torment and preconceived notions a certain someone held.

Admittedly, this wasn't my favorite book of hers that I've read, but I still enjoyed it overall. I would like to add that she is a brilliant closer. She can tell a story and close it beautifully.

"It was just her and me. Just us."

DNF Review for Ten Reasons to Stay by Candace Knoebel

One day a week—Thursdays—my husband and I could do whatever or whomever we pleased.
Protection was non-negotiable.
And no matter what, we had to be home by midnight.

Jack was the one who wanted an open marriage, but we were supposed to keep things simple. No strings. No commitments. It seemed so easy… until it wasn’t.

Devilishly handsome Cole Blackwater was only supposed to be a fling, but everything about him made me feel alive. Wanted. Seen. When I realized he was my husband’s boss, I should have broken things off right then… but I didn’t.

One day a week, I could pretend that I was his and he was mine… until Cole wanted more.

But how could I decide between the man I’d promised to love, honor, and cherish, and the man who tempted me to break every single vow I’d made?

DNF at ... I don't really know. I stopped reading right around 20%, or slightly beyond when I made my GR update, and then skimmed the entire rest of the book. My views and thoughts on this book never once wavered or changed. It just didn't work for me. I think this is yet another case of a very intriguing synopsis luring me in with the possibility of something so forbidden, leading to a very emotional realization.....but the actual story and writing not working for me. I HATE WHEN THIS HAPPENS.

The TWO main reasons I couldn't handle this book were the characters and their personalities as well as the actual writing style/storytelling style. I'll break it down.

--> The characters:
CORINNE was a meek (some might say weak) woman. She was run by her husband's decisions, never her own. I personally didn't like that, but I understand not all women are strong and can stand up for themselves against someone they love. I totally get it. That's not what bothered me. It was that literally from ONE page to the NEXT she grew a backbone. While, yay! she got some nerves and strength, it made me shake my head. I mean, here her husband is telling her what's happening next in their world and she shrivels up and basically talks back/argues with her husband IN FRONT OF HIS BOSS like a petulant child. Ok? It wasn't like she was standing up for herself; she was whining. And THAT turns me off from a female character quicker than anything else. I don't do whining. But then....we lost that backbone 100 other times....waffling around and excusing pathetic stunts by her immature husband. It was so aggravating.

JACK was a self-centered, controlling, narcissistic jerk. The world revolved around him and he made all the decisions to suit HIM - not as a couple or part of a team. He also decided what was happening in their love life, so this was NOT a joint decision......again, all about HIM. I did NOT like him and every single thing he did was to benefit his own selfish agenda. Nope. No. Nuh uh. Not one thing was in his wife's best interests and he purposely sabotaged what was going on with her and Cole because his jealousy reared it's ugly head from a decision he mentally unanimously made!! I realize we were supposed to not like him, and Knoebel accomplished that ten-fold. I didn't like him even for one minute. Not one. But he was so over the top rude and mean to her that there should have been zero questions in Corinne's mind as to staying with him or working it out.

COLE was, for all intents and purposes, the token rich CEO of a company there to sweep Corinne off her feet. He was never going to fall in love and loved his one night stands....typical, right? Apparently, he was a romantic at heart. Who knew? Well, I felt sorry for him on more than one occasion because Corinne was literally so undecided she was practically leading him on the entire freaking story. It was completely and utterly frustrating to watch this amazing man falling in love with a married woman (knowingly), yet he would listen to her hemming and hawing about her asshole husband and be so supportive of her pain and anguish. It was increasingly frustrating to watch her teeter-totter in her decisions and watch Cole falter in his strength. I know Corinne was caught between a rock and a hard spot, but this was a no brainer, no questions asked dilemma!!! #TeamCole100%

--> The writing:
This book screamed forbidden and that always has me super excited. I love the fact that there was going to be an emotional tug of war because I love those. I really do, so this should have been a slam dunk for me. And what a different storyline to tease me with too! Well, when you dangle a sexy suggestion at the end of one chapter, you might want to pick it up in the next....instead of dropping it and not working it out because there were some serious missed opportunities to provide added temptation and true feelings in this one. It was more tell than show with not a single ounce of angst, which is always rough reading for me with this type of trope.

Another thing bothered me and made me question things. Why put SO MUCH emphasis on your vows (in the synopsis, all throughout the book), when you are going along with an open marriage? The fear of explaining 'everything' to her parents?? WHAT?? Why? It just made no sense and added to the wishy-washyness of this book. You are a grown adult. You should be making decisions based on what YOU want and not what you fear others may think. Ugh. And now I ask, what in the world is Five Reasons to Stay going to be about? Because if I had to hazard a guess, I would blame .... nevermind. Maybe not. This is a complete standalone, but there is another book coming. I will not be reading that one.

DNF Review for If We Fall by Nina Lane

IF WE FALL
by NINA LANE

We fell in love. Then our world fell apart.

I wished so hard for Cole Danforth. And one day, he came true. He was my first boyfriend, my first lover, my first and only love. He should also have been my last.

But in a split-second, we were ripped apart, our lives broken, my heart shattered. After ten years,

I've returned to my hometown, the place of my greatest joy and darkest pain.

Cole is still here, but the beautiful boy I'd loved is gone. Now he's a ruthless, unforgiving man determined to feed both my resentment and my lust.

Then our torturous past encroaches again, trapping us in a violent storm.

But this time, there is no escape.

DNF at 55%....for my kindle's safety, I am stopping here.

First and foremost, the prequel for this series was just the dangle of a tease I needed to jump into this new series by a new to me author. I enjoyed it so much that I was so excited to jump into the next book, hoping for some good heartache, some real emotions to pull from. Sign me up!! From where Cole and Josie began, leading all the way up until "their last kiss", I was for sure their story was going to lead me on an emotional journey. I was wrong.

I tried. I seriously, honestly tried but I couldn't make it through this first full book. What happened between the prologue and the first book? I wish I knew. It was like reading two different authors telling two different stories. Maybe she planned it that way. Maybe she meant for the love to be so *happy* and the fallout be so *painful* - after all, that would make perfect sense. But reading it shouldn't have been painful....

First, Cole is NOT a man. He's a coward. I understand his supposed guilt, but will never, ever excuse his reasonings for leaving her. That put a very sour taste in my mouth from the very beginning, some drama for no damn reason. And I honestly don't think there was anything she could do or say to make me feel otherwise. --> However, skipping to the end and reading that cliffhanger put a lot into perspective, but I only did that because I knew I wasn't going to finish it. Hindsight and all. The delivery of the entire plot failed for me. It went from tempting me with the prequel to pissing me off with the first book.

I do realize that not every plot is going to be original, I really do get that. But this one felt very forced and not at all original....a regurgitated plot that spanned many of the books/movies we have all read/seen. I mean, we've all read "this" story with all the twists and happenings - it was not really formulaic in a sense, but it was very predictable with each turn. Unfortunately, there was nothing enticing me to keep going. It felt like it dragged on, and with ridiculous phrases and actions/happenings, I knew I just needed to quit so I didn't leave with a salty taste in my mouth. I mean, with sentences like this, I don't even know....

"His cock was a pulsing rod inside me, throbbing against my inner walls."

I mean, really? That is sooo....yeah, no. Mmm mm. Nope. *shakes head* Can't do it, sorry.

Let's add in some seriously ridiculous anger/rage. Cole had literally ZERO reasons to be as angry at Josie as he was, but let's set that aside for later. Let's move along to his anger at the town that was completely misplaced. I saw and understood that angry POV from when he was younger because that's a young, immature person's way of thinking and I get it!! I really do...but to carry it on and allow it to fester in the fashion that it was, and with such tenacity and volatility? NO!! Grow up! Move on! Get out of there!!! Why are you even there?? It's doing NOTHING but dragging you down. Talk about a chip on your shoulder. Geez.

Josie had some rather interesting fears, and while I have never lived through/dealt with them - so I definitely don't understand them, they felt very.....off. I mean, it's been 10 years aaand you still can't function? I guess I don't get it - but maybe it's because I don't want to understand at this point anymore, so I don't feel compelled to empathize. I felt his anger resonating off of him and he came across as a royal jerk. Cole played the part really well, especially when we knew deep down what was supposedly causing it, but also where his thoughts truly resided. With his anger and her fears and phobias, it was a match made with an overused formula.

Why this bothered me on top of everything else, I'll never know but he was constantly hard around her, feeling 'it' down his thigh. Mmmhmmm.....because that's where hard ones go. I get it. Not really, but that's cool.

I have ZERO desire to read the second book in this series, which was telling for me and told me I didn't even need to finish the first. I did, however, go to the end and see what everyone was super excited about and what "twists" they wanted answers for.....and nope. I still have no desire because I can now tell you exactly W.H.Y. he is pushing her away and why he never wants her close again. Guilt probably isn't the right answer....but now we are hiding a bigger secret. And I feel it's pretty predictable, to say the least.

It was just super, ridiculously boring for me, but gosh dangit!! It was angering as well!! I hate when a book make me mad. I hate saying that it was boring, because it shouldn't be boring - taking a journey through another's love story should be heartbreaking, emotion-causing, sweet and lively. But when I kept rolling my eyes, page after page, wishing for them to get to the point, I knew I was done.

So now, I sit and question why everyone loved this so much more than I did because this had the potential to tear me up and make me hurt and feel something. I wanted to read this duet so bad. Like, really bad. As much as I tried, I couldn't get through it and that makes me sad. I'm sure I started getting nitpicky near the end, but I just kept getting irked by little things happened....telling sign. sigh
