As I try to come up with some words to describe this book, I'm going to be very careful not to cuss out Ms. Mabie because she left me on a huge cliffie - until October no less!! But what a gooooood cliffie it was!! I never saw that coming - even though I knew it was a trilogy, I just wasn't sure how she was going to bait me. OMGosh....I'll slowly crumble while I wait for this next one though. But alas, she has me chomping at the bit for it too! Aahhh!!! LOVE.
And of course, this is my SECOND fake marriage book in a matter of months, and I will admit that when authors that I've read and have enjoyed write these kinds of books, I still generally shy away from them. But TWICE now I've enjoyed them so.very.much! Shocking, I know....I might have to take back my 'never read' stance on this trope now. I am so invested in Abe and Myra's story! I thought about them all day yesterday after I finished this first book. I am so excited to read the second book because it was juuuust getting to the exploratory stage, if you catch my drift. I loved it!!! I love the slow burn in this one, and Mabie wrote it quite convincingly!
One thing I love about Mabie's storytelling is it's not an over-embellished, overused, big-word-using read. She doesn't just pull from a thesaurus for every other adjective or word, because that's too busy and I appreciate it a lot. It just gets tiring and it's happening more and more, so I appreciate the easy read. It was a comfortable read from the very beginning, and it's a worthy journey until the very end. I love her style and her flow and this book was the perfect example of why.
The discovery of these blossoming feelings between the characters was my favorite part. How they started and moved toward the relationship they had, it was 100% organic. It was intriguing and the kind I could sit back and get caught up in. Abe was a solid man, with a good head on his shoulders. While he knew what his thought processes were, hers were coming from a completely altered reality and it was a neat dynamic to wander through. Being inside their minds as they discovered a whole new way of life within their own little world away from what they have only ever known was really neat. He knew her reality, but it had been so long since he had to deal with it, so I loved how driven he was to save her but still had some errors in judgement and realities. It made him real and relatable, but I also loved seeing that he was weighing all his options while being thoughtful and confused, all mixed into one. I loved his internal battles.
Myra, oh dear. What a whole new world to peer in on and see how another has lived their entire life. Not casting judgement, but I was definitely in the OMGosh category when things were described. Her innocence was tempting and her curiosity was intoxicating; she clearly got Abe's undivided but unassuming attention. I could easily read more from her POV because her way of thinking was never ever on the same level as mine, and it was nice to read pure innocence with a whole new perspective. While I have NO concept of the kind of life that Myra lived, it made for a great read because it was a new world for me to explore. It made me question daily activities and how she would handle certain circumstances, completely out of curiosity. It was neat seeing her try new things...almost to the point of giggling at the purity of her excitement for new things.
I really couldn't put this book down. The pace was a slow and easy perusal....so much to read, but I couldn't slow down!! It wasn't a bad slow, it was a great slow - I never felt rushed or like things needed to move along quicker. So very good - I really enjoyed this one. Mabie created a story that made me think about all the differences; our/my everyday normal to her/their everyday normal. It kept me engaged, watching, seeing, learning the whole time I was reading. Oh, and this cover was a good 'mental picture' for me to hang onto while I was reading it - not gonna lie. HAHAHA!!

She cares about politics, but will not discuss them in public. She uses the same fork at every meal, watches Wayne's World while cleaning, and lets her dog sleep on her head. She has always been a writer. In fact, she was born with a pen in her hand, which almost never happens. Almost.
