DNF Review for Tempting Love by Kelly Elliott

TEMPTING LOVE
by KELLY ELLIOTT

Can a woman actually make you feel like you’re losing your damn mind?

Yes.

If she is Corina Miller.

The only woman who has ever made me long for something more, and let me tell you, that has me all kinds of messed up. After months of ignoring my feelings, it’s clear to me I’ve fallen for those piercing blue eyes and sexy smile.

But is it too late?

Have I pushed her into the arms of someone else?

Hell no am I letting that happen.

I’m on a mission to win the heart of the only woman I’ve ever cared about—and the only thing standing in my way is one stubborn and pissed off Corina.

I always did like a challenge.

"The one girl who really matters, the one you're going to want to spend the rest of our life with, that girl is going to take work."

I'm SO bummed this one didn't work for me. I have been reading this series and have enjoyed the ease of the story. These books were never about heaviness or angst. They weren't about depth and they weren't thought-provoking, just lazy-day reads. I knew going in to this book that I would be able to not think and just read some sweetness. I loved that about this series. They were palate cleansers for me. I never really thought of books that way, but once I started this series, I realized that's exactly what these were for me. There really isn't much depth, it was just easy-going, southern-style sweetness. No angst. Some OTT drama. Some sexy, sweet times. It just worked for me.

I have a very thin line when it comes to sweet reads though, because I do not enjoy them in general. I like a little gritty, a little heaviness to my reads, but I wanted to make room in my schedule for this seres because I was honestly enjoying the small town love that pulled me in. Nothing mind blowing, just super easy. I got that with this series, but this book in particular gave me more of a nose wrinkle response. Like, I do NOT like immaturity in a character when they willfully or maliciously set out to hurt someone. I don't like revenge, and I certainly don't like immaturity in grown adults. I got that from both Hero and heroine, and that bothered me a lot. I kept asking myself, "Why hurt the one you claim to love?" When I kept asking that question, I knew I needed to step back. It just wasn't working for me.

I was really looking forward to this book because I liked the introduction to Corina and Mitchell and the buildup in the first two books was there, so I knew that their relationship had some emotions to explore. Unfortunately, I couldn't get past their actions and that just made for a rough read for me.

I hope you enjoy this one if you jump in.

DNF Review for Voyeur by Fiona Cole

VOYEUR

I didn’t know she was my student the first time I paid to watch her at Voyeur.

Once she walked into my classroom, another smiling college freshman, I knew I should stop going. Stop watching.

But I couldn’t do it. Everything about her makes me want more, and once I realize she wants me too, the temptation becomes irresistible.

The worst part is that she has no idea her professor is the one watching behind the glass.

I just have to hope that once she finds out the truth, she wants the same thing I do. Because now that I've seen all of her, I can't look away.

REVIEW: DNF
Originally read in June 2018
Updated and added to original review

This being my first book by Fiona Cole, I was happy that it was going to be a taboo Student/Teacher trope because I love the forbidden side of things every now and then. The teasers and the synopsis all had a draw to it that made me want to check it out. To add to it, the cover was a huge bonus as that was very definitely a sexy one!! With all the pieces seemingly coming together to provide me with a story that I couldn't walk away from - I was ready to jump in. Unfortunately, I am going to count this as a DNF for me. I got to 50%, decided I needed to put it down before I got increasingly frustrated, and walked away for a bit. I wanted to come back to it and try again....lo and behold, I was done 'enough' to not feel like I needed to pick it back up.

I am not a huge fan of being strung along, and by 50% we had no idea WHY he had the hangups and the issues he did, but we knew that he was affected greatly and it caused some issues for him. I just felt like it dragged, and that was a huge turnoff for me.

I had a hard time with a few things as they were playing out, and I don't want to take away from anyone's discovery of this storyline, but the reason she had to take that job? No. Nu uh. That was frustrating in and of itself. I can also say that I don't necessarily like my men on the softer side, and he felt very weak to me. I didn't get much from him, and I realize it's probably because I didn't finish this one, but I know that I should have felt something towards him besides contempt and rolling my eyes. I also didn’t particularly like the heroine in this one either. I know that my feelings are not the norm with this book, and I get it. I just didn't like that it felt soooo draaaawnn ouuuut and it was only 50%....it was very slow for me, so since I have zero desire to finish this one, I am going to call it quits.

Edited to add: I find myself increasingly curious about more of her titles and I have already purchased some of her books. I will give her books another go, and I'll cross my fingers for a win. She seems to hit her target audience with sexiness and sass, so I'm hoping this was a one off for me.

DNF Review for This is Forever by Natasha Madison

THIS IS FOREVER
by NATASHA MADISON

Caroline
Becoming a teen mom at sixteen was not what I expected, but then again, neither was being a single parent. Still, I wouldn’t change my past because that boy is my world.

Hockey is the only thing my son seems to care about, so I work two jobs to make sure he can play. I’d do anything to make sure he doesn’t suffer because of the bad decisions his father made.

When he won a whole summer of hockey training, I knew in my heart he was going to have an amazing time.

What I wasn’t prepared for was meeting his new summer coach.

He was magnetic, powerful, and a player—in all forms of the word.

If my life had taught me anything up to this point, it was how to avoid making bad decisions, and Justin Stone was the definition of a bad decision.

I could never be a woman his family approved of. Even if I wished I could be.

Justin
Growing up as the son of a hockey God is one thing. Growing up as the brother of a second hockey God is another. I had big skates to fill, so it was a good thing I loved every second of it.

Summer was my off time, my time to let loose, but when they ask me to coach a hockey camp for underprivileged kids, I couldn’t say no.

But when she walked in holding a little boy’s hand, my heart stopped beating. Or maybe it started for the first time.

They were a package deal, and I knew this—wanted it more than I’ve ever wanted anything. It didn’t take long to realize that no matter what happened,

I would do anything to protect them.

She is the only one I want to be with.

When push comes to shove, I have to prove to everyone that this is my choice, and This is Forever.

REVIEW: DNF AT 22%

Argh!! I am SO bummed. Seriously. I like Natasha Madison. I've read a few of her books, and I've been able to smile throughout them and enjoy them because her writing is simple, her stories are easy and fun. Shockingly enough, I couldn't make it through this one. The number of issues I had didn't make this an easy or fun read.

Predictable: my gosh, I could tell you what was going to happen before it happened, based on what had just happened. I don't want to know what's going on. I want to be mesmerized and taken on a journey of twists and a story that makes me gasp, makes me feel, and makes me need to know what happens next. I should not be sitting here saying, oh....yeah, that's gonna happen.

Drama: enough with the OTT drama. It's frustrating when a story is propelled by the drama instead of the growth of the characters and the storyline that is unfolding. When said drama is leading the charge in giving me the rundown, it loses its effectiveness and this time it was just too much for me.

Formulaic: she definitely followed a "tried and true" storyline with this one. It was too much because I didn't get anything new out of it. Nothing kept me turning the pages or coming back for more. I guess you could file this under predictable, but it read like a manual on how to write a cheesy love story with a new man that all of the sudden is alpha and all over you and how you raise your kid. Orrrr, because we are a single mommy, every issue that could possibly go wrong will go wrong, but never fear - the new boyfriend will take care of you, even though you're going to push him away. Cue the stubbornness. I just wanted something new and refreshing and I didn't get that.

Writing: while it wasn't baaad, it wasn't her normal, easy flow. It felt stilted....almost hitched and slightly cautious, and that doesn't read like a normal Natasha Madison book for me. Equal parts forced and drama laden, this one was just not my favorite of hers.

This is really hard for me because I hate when an author I've enjoyed has a book I can't even make it through. I'm pretty positive it had everything to do with the lack of angst and real emotion. I struggled simply because it wasn't original and the predictability of the entire storyline was pretty basic, which didn't push me to keep going. I'm sad to say it just didn't pull me in and hold my attention. I'm just a frustrated reader because this one was going to be awesome...and it just didn't hit that spot. Clearly, this is a me thing because it is getting rave reviews and readers are loving it.

Book Review and Giveaway for Heartland by Sarina Bowen

An emotional friends to lovers romance full of risky secrets and late-night lessons in seduction.

Dylan is my best friend, and the only person in my life who understands me. He doesn’t mind my social awkwardness or my weird history. The only glitch? He doesn’t know that I’ve been hopelessly, desperately in love with him since the first day we picked apples together in his family’s orchard.

But I know better than to confess.

Now that we’re both in college together, I’m seeing a new side of him. College Dylan drinks and has a lot of sex. None of it with me.

Until the night I foolishly ask him to tutor me in more than algebra…and he actually says yes.

But the cool morning light shows me how badly I’ve endangered our friendship. And I don’t know if anything will be the same again.

REVIEW: 3.5+ STARS
"I feel evil every time I notice her curves, or have the urge to taste her smile."

I have loved the True North series since the very first one I picked up. With each one, I've been lucky to fall in love with not only the characters, but the writing as well. Sarina Bowen is definitely an author I enjoy and this series sits high on my recommend list. Chastity and Dylan's story was all sorts of innocence and mistaken communication, learning and fumbling. It was also an exercise in patience as well as understanding....for me.

Once again, I'm reminded of how an innocent love can blossom in a seemingly improbable world. With me enjoying the angsty side of a story more than a sweet side, this one sat comfortably on the sweet seat. When I wanted to hurry it up and soak in their attraction and revel in their chemistry, they kept the pace slow and cozy and made their way that best fit them. Equally frustrating yet satisfying. But very important.

"In my heart I've always been a rebel."

Chastity had a very basic, almost rudimentary understanding of the outside world based on where she came from, so she was very innocent, but knew what she was feeling - I liked that about her. That strength in who she was and what she felt was liberating. She had an honest level of immaturity - and it fit for her circumstance, which allowed a lot of her curiosity to play out accordingly. I did have a hard time reconciling some of her naivety with her actions, but nothing that wasn't easily explained.

"Talking about sex is probably my fifth favorite hobby."

Dylan, my gosh - poor Dylan. His world held such a heavy breath that I wasn't too sure how he held his head up. I loved him. His actions and reactions all fit in accordance to his pain he held, which in turn explains how this whole thing went down. He is such a playful young man and I loved his demeanor and the way he carried himself in the world.

When they were together - FIRE. Their chemistry seriously rocked the pages. It was definitely a sweet, sweet romance with lots of reward and discovery between them, so that was very satisfying to read and it's what kept me in the book. I loved their story. but when they were not together or not having actual discussions....I was bored out of my mind. I hate saying that because I absolutely love her writing, but I just struggled with the lack of flair that the words carried throughout the first half of the book. This one felt more stiff. She usually has more of a 'lean' to her words; a more relaxed flow. I am not saying this was a forced narrative, because in the entire time I've been reading her, she has never once had a forced story, but it just felt more stiff. I love her voice, I love her canter, I love the way she writes. This one just felt different. I honestly loved their story and enjoyed watching them fall in love.

Communication, or the lack thereof, was a key source of frustration. While I can understand why it happens in this scenario, the noncommunication is overplayed and underwhelming and I struggled with it the most. It added a sense of *drag* to the story for me, which was difficult because I LOVE her words and they are usually alive with emotion. This one didn’t have that flair, and it felt pretty one dimensional but I will admit, this story took a tremendous leap around 66% and it was smooth sailing from there on out. I think the part that kept me going was the fact that Chass and Dylan had palpable chemistry. It was amazing when they were on the page together, talking or working together, because that electricity was alive and I couldn't stop soaking in their attraction.

This was a very slow, very paced read. I admit to having a hard time with slower reads, but I know that is solely a me thing. I need to keep in mind that this is truly their world and I’m just a visitor. So these two, they take things slower. Their pace in life is more relaxed and chill, so it would do me good to recognize that for what it is. And Sarina is good at giving me a pretty accurate read in a book. So the speed set aside, I really enjoyed their love story. The joy they gave me, the love they showed me, it all worked in the end and I walked away with a smile.

Bowen's words always dance and tell me a story, so even if this one seemed to lack her usual flair for me, it still worked. I’m not sure if it was a me-mood thing, or the actual writing, but it wasn’t as exciting. Not bad! I promise, but it wasn’t the norm for me. This is not a negative review by any means. It was so close to being a full 4 stars, but with the struggle from the beginning, it just made me sad. It's so hard to feel this way, especially when I loved the characters individually, and the story as a whole and have always enjoyed the author.

I loved catching up with the entire Shipley family, and seeing their dynamic play out over the pages was definitely a trip down memory lane. Putting all their stories together in the outline of this one was fun. The nice thing is, once again, she effortlessly tells a standalone story within a series and you are not missing a thing. Bowen's always good for a guaranteed entertaining story ripe with quality family time, lessons learned, and a love worth exploring. Oh, and I want Rickie’s story!!!

"Kissing her makes me feel wild."

REVIEW: 5 Heartbreaking Stars
"I should have known, kissing you once would never be enough."

*~* SPOILER FREE REVIEW *~*

There are only a handful of books that I've been able to open up and feel an immediate emotional connection to within the first two paragraphs. Any author that can emote a story so heavily with just their words is an author that’s going to give me a story I want to explore deeper. A couple I know I need to meet. A love I desperately need to experience. That’s exactly what I got with Even if it Hurts by Marni Mann. Immediately upon jumping in, her words painted a picture as an amazing love emerged. Absolutely breathtaking.

But also heartbreaking.

You know those books we all feel so lucky to fall into? The ones that tell a story that catches our breath and moves our hearts? Well, it was my turn. I fell and I fell hard. The love in this book was one that spanned years, surpassed logic, and defied common sense of the heart and mind. But that can't and won't negate the intensity of the topic at hand, nor will it go down easily with others.

I realize that many people are going to struggle with this one, and rightfully so - it's not an easy subject to accept, but I also know it’s not my story to judge. It’s my chance to live and feel emotions that were so extraordinarily told within a heart that was tangled up between two men, and I very definitely did. I liked that it wasn't black and white. I liked that it wasn't easily spelled out. I loved that it was honest emotions fighting moral responsibility. That internal battle that pulled at my heartstrings and lead me through a very emotional and passionate story wasn't told with ease, but with a pain that radiated throughout the pages. This one hurt my heart. I felt the turmoil. I had tears in my eyes at one point. It wasn't an easy journey, but it was an impactful one.

I got completely caught up watching Chloe discover not only a new world, but discovering love in it's purest form as well. Unhindered and without borders, love can make your eyes dance and your heart skip a beat. That's exactly how I felt as I watched Chloe fall in love for the first time. When her circumstances changed, which added a new dynamic to her story, that allowed me to witness an emotion that I've never personally known as her heart struggled to gain purchase on what was right for her. That journey was what it was all about, and I feel like Mann nailed it with this story. Emotionally heavy, but superb in every way.

Having said that, this is exactly why a triangle is my favorite trope. It is heartbreaking. It is going to piss people off and cause some very lively discussion (my favorite part!!). But I love the exploration of a love that isn't easily explained. Hearts held captive by a love that is more powerful than they are? Yes, please!! Give me a love the characters are powerless to stop any day of the week. I want that hiccup in my breath. I want that lurch in my chest. I want that drop in the pit of my stomach. It is a polarizing topic, but that’s why I enjoy it so much. There is so much to discover about this type of love....what pushes someone to their emotional wits' end? Why does the heart fight logic? I love that Marni Mann explored this issue with the depth that she did.

Her characters were relatable and I connected easily with them individually; all showing a growth and a depth that made them equally perfect in their own right.

Oliver - fun, loving, sweet, charming, caring, the most perfect smile to give an air of comfort. He had me smiling so much, but he also had me melting in my seat as I watched him strip down his emotions and bare himself with an intensity that would easily keep me planted. He had my heart the minute he smiled and whispered in her ear from behind, giving me all the goosebumps and giggles.

Lance - alpha, mysterious, deep, impatient, strong. He knew what he wanted and had no problems going after it, no matter the consequences. He also had everything at his fingertips and spared no expense in spoiling Chloe, which allowed for a very fast and carefree relationship without a worry in the world. It lent an air of freedom from the heaviness she was dealing with. An undeniable security in a love that was strong.

Chloe - determined, smart, beautiful, detailed. Living this book through her vantage point allowed me an insight into her thinking and her heart, so when I saw her struggle - I struggled too. I read this entire book like I was put in her heart and her mind.... so I felt that same pain. I was conflicted like she was. I was living in her world, spectator or not, but I know I felt every facet of this book.

It was all about getting into these characters' heads, their emotions, and feeling that anxiety that came with decisions that needed to be made and I will admit, they were not easy decisions. I feel like this story was emotionally driven and that never let up. I felt and understood the pull as well as the anger for the actions taken. It was written so well and I felt every single thing. It’s these types of reads that make me scream from the rooftops because the discussion that follows is one that is so impassioned and intense. I’m not here to excuse actions. I’m here to understand emotions. I’m here to feel the decisions and the repercussions.

It was romantic and exciting.
It was amazing but heartbreaking.
It was sensual and hot.
It was brutal but genuine.
It was sexy and tantalizing.
It was realistic but devastating.
It was perfection.

Beautiful(ly) torture(some). I love when a book moves me like this and makes me feel as much as I did. This was nothing short of amazing for me and is sitting as a Top Favorite for 2020 already. This will be recommended often as a Must Read. Marni Mann is fast becoming one of my go-to authors for truthful, emotionally charged, life changing stories. I don't think this story will ever leave me...

"I don't like missing you, Chloe."
