EXCLUSIVE Excerpt for Heartland by Sarina Bowen

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT FOR HEARTLAND
Releasing January 28, 2020

Humming to herself, Chastity retrieves the book and a notebook off the desk. Then she sits beside me. “Here we go. I did the first three, but I’m not sure I did them right.”

I take the notebook, scanning her work. I’m a little distracted, though, by Chastity’s proximity. Her shampoo has a fruity scent that’s familiar to me, probably from the night I pushed her up against a wall and kissed the hell out of her.

That was a stupid, stupid thing to do. Because now I’m thinking about it again. We fell into kissing the way I once fell off a dock into Lake Champlain. Suddenly and without warning. And even though I’d been skunk drunk when I’d kissed her, I can’t forget how good it was.

“Is it that bad?” she whispers.

“What?” I look up, finding her blue eyes at close range.

“The first three problems. Did I screw up?”

“Uh…” I squint at the page again and force myself to focus. “No. You’re doing fine. They’re not much different than the last two week’s work, but with more terms thrown in.” Chastity tends to panic whenever things start to look different. “Try number four, okay? Let’s see how you go about breaking it down.”

She takes the notebook back with a sigh and begins to factor the expression. The first thing she tries doesn’t pan out.

“No problem,” I coach. “Try again.”

It takes her a few minutes to warm up, but slowly we work through each new problem. And then we get to the doozy at the bottom of the page.

“Ugh, I don’t know,” she complains. “That one will take all year.”

“Just give it a shot? If you hurry, your reward will be pizza.”

She leans over the page. As I wait for her to chew through number seventeen, she taps the end of the pencil against her knee, and my eye is drawn to the hole in her vintage jeans and the smooth skin showing through. I have the unlikely urge to pass my thumb over that oval of skin and test its softness.

Okay. Fuck.

I close my eyes and take a slow breath. What is my problem today? Chastity has always been a looker, but I don’t usually do this. I don’t usually focus on the wrong things.

Opening my eyes, the first thing I see is Chastity’s cleavage. Her soft T-shirt dips into a V right where her breasts stretch the cotton fabric…

There is no safe place to rest my gaze, apparently. My brain has become confused. Confused, and also a traitor.

“Dyl?”

I snap to attention. “Sorry. What was the question?”

“Can I multiply Z like this?”

“Uh…” I take a deep breath and get another whiff of her feminine scent. I must be really hungry, because it addles my brain. “Yes. No. Jesus.”

Chastity laughs. “Which is it?”

“Yes, you can multiply both sides by Z. But don’t forget about your denominator there…”

“Oh, crap,” she says, erasing what she’d just written. “Okay, I have another idea.”

She scribbles away, while I lean back and try to think about my own homework. Tomorrow is a holiday, but I have a history paper due on Tuesday. I close my eyes and think deep thoughts about the industrial revolution.

This works fine until Chastity puts a hand on my leg. It’s just a casual touch—her palm resting over the denim of my jeans, right above my knee. But she might as well have put her hand on my cock, because I’m way too aware of her now.

“Dylan,” she says. “Tell me I’ve got it now. Look.”

I scan her work, and it’s a miracle I can concentrate on the page. But it’s true—she’s cracked it open and arrived at the right answer. “Nice! You’re done already. Now we can eat pizza and watch stupid shit on YouTube.”

She laughs, turning to me. And there it is again—that smile that flattens me sometimes. I love making Chastity smile.

But holy shit. All I can think about is kissing her again.

It hits me that Rickie was probably right. And Kaitlyn, too, unfortunately. It might be the only time they ever agreed on anything, but I am attracted to Chastity. And I don’t have the first idea what to think about that.

An emotional friends to lovers romance full of risky secrets and late-night lessons in seduction.

Dylan is my best friend, and the only person in my life who understands me. He doesn’t mind my social awkwardness or my weird history. The only glitch? He doesn’t know that I’ve been hopelessly, desperately in love with him since the first day we picked apples together in his family’s orchard.

But I know better than to confess.

Now that we’re both in college together, I’m seeing a new side of him. College Dylan drinks and has a lot of sex. None of it with me.

Until the night I foolishly ask him to tutor me in more than algebra…and he actually says yes.

But the cool morning light shows me how badly I’ve endangered our friendship. And I don’t know if anything will be the same again.

The Book Bee's 2019 Favorites List

This year proved to be a challenging one in my book and blogging world. I am first and foremost a reader, but blogging is a fun way for me to shout out my love of a book. I knew this year was my year to add new tropes, new authors, and new genres to my already long list of books I want to read. Sometimes it doesn't always work out in my favor and I end up with a ton of DNFs to contend with. But sometimes I find that gem.

Needless to say, I always carry on because I love to find a book that makes me feel all the feels and want to shout it out. Here are the books that have left an impression on me this year. I hope you enjoy this list.

Without further ado....

Please note: I will always provide a spoiler free review for every book I list on here, as well as an affiliate purchase link.

FAVORITE STANDALONE for 2019

This came highly recommended to me by a few of my reading friends and I hadn't really read a bully romance before this one. I have also not read one since this one that has given me all the feelings CARTER did. This was probably my favorite introduction to a crazy new mind to explore. Sam Mariano jumped straight onto my list of authors to read more of. I loved this book and can't wait for more in this series. (Standalone) This sits HIGH atop my favorites list for 2019. It was brutal. It was harsh. It was downright WRON(G)OOD.

When an author can tell me a story and make me put myself in the shoes of the character's POV I am reading, that is awesome - it's great. I love it. When an author can make me empathize with the antihero in the book, that is amazing. But to make me cheer him on?? To make me want him to succeed in his quest?? What the heck?? Either I am SICK, because this is not ok - or she is just bringing out the depravity in ME. Ok, she's not (let's laugh together - we are laughing, right?), but I couldn't help but question myself the entire time I read this book.

MY REVIEW       AMAZON         GOODREADS

I love it when an author can take me inside the inner recesses of the mind and mess with my emotions. This story was most definitely a trip and one that had me thinking about it long after I wrote my review and moved on to another book. I never knew what was going to happen and I love that she had me guessing the entire time I was reading.

What I thought I knew, I did not....

I cannot describe adequately the love that Lucas and Mila had. It wasn't necessarily one of uncontested love, because it most definitely fought hard for the hearts it inhabited. But that love withstood some serious testing of wills.

When a love story is written with so much depth, yet the story isn't a Point A - to - Point B scenario, it adds a little more weight to the reality of the situation I am reading and I crave that complexity. This one was very complex because the layers were riddled with facts and emotions, actions and reactions. So, so good. So telling. So arduous. So worthy.

MY REVIEW            AMAZON         GOODREADS

I honestly picked up this duet because it sounded a lot like Jewel E Ann's Transcend Duet, and we all know how much I loved that one!!! Well, what a surprise at how much I loved this one as well. This time travel style trope is fast becoming a favorite of mine. I love the juxtaposition of old world vs new world. I couldn't put these books down and loved that it was also an introduction to a new author for me.

Her words were heavy and articulate and she had no problems building a world around something so unbelievable, yet she made it completely believable. And, of course, by the end I physically felt my heart......fall. It sunk. My chest got heavy and my breathing changed. To physically feel a book like that is a wonderful thing.

MY REVIEWS:         PARALLEL       INTERSECT

   AMAZON          GOODREADS

Connor and Ava have stuck with me all year. This duet was a YA Angsty Mess of Perfection. The love story was complemented beautifully by the life lessons and truth behind true love.

This book was the epitome of YA emotions on CRACK. It was organic. It grew naturally and it moved me. Gosh, it made me follow with half a hitch in my breathing - I was breathing funny!!

She nailed the teen angst and the stubborn anger.
She nailed the pressure and teenaged stress.
She nailed the love and the heartbreak.

MY REVIEWS:  Heartache and Hope        First and Forever

AMAZON                 GOODREADS

This book was a very emotional one for me to wander through, but it showcased why Ella Fields sits on my list top authors that I know that can deliver a YA/NA romance with a punch of truth and reality. It was delivered painfully well. She never fails to amaze me with her stories of tortured characters and flawed love.

I sat for a few minutes with my head in my hands, pondering....thinking....mulling over what I just read, wondering why the heart is a warrior the mind chooses to battle. I went in knowing this was a triangle, and if you've followed me for any amount of time, I've made no secret that this is my favorite kind of story/trope because the pull between two lovers gets me every time.

MY REVIEW            AMAZON           GOODREADS

This was the second book in the Fallen Angel Series and Ella Frank and Brooke Blaine left nothing out. This was the hottest book in Halo and Viper's storyline and it was simply delicious. The cover, to me, gave me the best visual of a brooding band member that always thought the only way was the naughty way.  His transformation alone was what made not only this book, but this series one of my favorites for 2019.

Rockstar Romances are a favorite trope of mine, so when it happened to be an MM story, I knew I was in for it!

This second book in the trilogy was nothing short of sexy and fun, but it also allowed a deeper growth that I did not truly anticipate. Detailing a love with so many obstacles and yet, the need outweighed the want in this one. The desire outdid the lust.

MY REVIEW            AMAZON           GOODREADS

FAVORITE REMAKE for 2019

I walked into Bred with zeal - I knew that I was ready to revisit Pip's story from Great Expectations in a new revamped, reworked story that followed the same vein. Bred sits on my shelf next to my original hardback of Great Expectations. Absolute perfection and she nailed the nostalgia for me.

I honestly and personally think Scott nailed it. Had I not read Great Expectations, would I feel the same way? I can't truthfully answer that because, again, favorite book from my childhood being updated and presented to me in a current format? I couldn't walk away from the opportunity to fall in love with the same story all over again. I enjoyed every page, every word, every scenario....I read it with a smile and it was such a breath of fresh air for me.

MY REVIEW            AMAZON           GOODREADS

A PLACE WITHOUT YOU
by Jewel E Ann

Jewel E Ann never ever ceases to amaze me. Year after year she provides me with love stories so profound that I'm left thinking about that arc for months later. The love between Bodhi and Henna still makes my heart squeeze because the ultimate decisions are sometimes the hardest ones....but they are the right ones to make. This story provided me with a good amount of angst, not to mention a few tears, but it also solidified why Jewel is my favorite FATE writer.

I am such a slow, meticulous reader, so when the words are visual and the feelings are palpable, it brings the story to life. This is exactly how Jewel writes. Her words are electric when she tells a story. When Bodhi and Henna met, it was a sensual dance of flirting, smiling and winking. Their chemistry was immediate and intense, but I don't think it was unexplainable because it was destined to be.

MY REVIEW            AMAZON           GOODREADS

And once again, I got a story that was an emotional journey. It wasn't a marathon, but a well-paced journey through the turmoil one family faces. I loved that it was a different background, a different kind of story. One that defined perspective in a whole new light. I think my favorite part about her books are that they provide me an alternate reality to my own understanding. I always have something to discuss after I'm done reading her words and I enjoy the fact that her voice, her flow, speaks to me and really works well for me.

Leave it to Hoover to give me a reality check - no billionaires. No rich man's world. No over the top proclamations or actions. Nothing. Just reality and normal, everyday people....with a devastating journey to watch unfold. This whole story was a story of perspectives. A story of life unfolding without bias or fairness, taking no shame in the lives it's destroying in the process. This book stopped me in my tracks and glued me to my seat.

MY REVIEW            AMAZON           GOODREADS

FAVORITE SERIES for 2019

After my introduction to Ella Frank in 2018, I knew I wanted to read more by her. It's no secret I pack my calendar with tours and leave very little time for personal reads, so I knew after reading her Confessions Series, I needed to make sure I saved time for her every.single.time. This series, however, made me fall in love with them as a DUO. They are my favorite co-writers and this series sealed that deal. I absolutely loved Halo and Viper, and adding Killian, Jagger and Slade into the mix made it that much better. This series is NOT to be missed.

FAVORITE INTRODUCTION for 2019

The Wives was my introduction to Tarryn Fisher's words. I had heard about her over the years, even met her a time or two - but I had never set aside enough time to make it through one of her books. I was determined to fix that this year.

I got to a certain point in the book, and the writing on the wall became very clear in a blurry sort of way - so trying to make sense of it all was interesting. Now I had answers, but I needed the coordinating questions to match them up to. Not totally unpredictable - given the layout, but completely eye-widening because while I clearly don’t read this genre enough, it had just enough suspense and shock to guide me along, making me cling to her every word. I originally read it one way, but then I found myself scrutinizing the words and the implied tones used earlier, the further I got into it.

MY REVIEW            AMAZON         GOODREADS

FAVORITE COVERS for 2019
There were two covers that stuck out and still remind me of the story I read....

Another first read for me landing on my favorites list because of a cover - this cover actually caught my eye before I even knew what the book was about, and that's what drew me in to wanting to read it. However, lucky for me - the story was just as good and I'm so glad I grabbed it. An emotionally taxing journey for one of my favorite tropes: Best Friend's Little Sister.

FIRST AND FOREMOST: I don't feel like I can start this review without first mentioning this absolutely exquisite cover. This cover immediately caught my eye the very first time I saw it and it's what drew me to actually wanting to see what the book was about. So this time....I did judge a book by it's cover. And thank gosh I did. I definitely love this cover and enjoyed the book. And oh so fitting and original. Bravo, Miss Lane. Bravo.

MY REVIEW            AMAZON           GOODREADS

For my first read of Marni Mann's, I was impressed. I was also emotionally broken. I always do a spoiler free review, but this one is one that I wanted drilled in that you needed to go in blind. The whole part of this book was the systematic unraveling and discovery of everything that was going on. It was torturous beauty in a dance of words. It was so good! But the cover is what seals the deal placing this one on my favorites list.

I felt like I was reading a story within a story - and that was awesome. Mann's word play is excellent! Distinctly separate men, wholly separate voices, and completely different outcome than I imagined. I cried from 85% on in this book. Not because of what happened, but because of WHO happened and, you guys....just YES. I completely loved this one and seriously cannot recommend it enough. I *really* really liked this book!

MY REVIEW            AMAZON           GOODREADS

NOTABLE MENTION for 2019
TELL ME EVERYTHING
by Amy Hatvany

This was my first read by Amy, and boy was I sucked in! The plot was riveting, the words were flowing, and the story was intriguing. I fell completely addicted and was so glad I jumped into her book. It was so different and definitely not run of the mill, and I enjoy that incredibly so.

With a plot that harbors on angering, I knew that this one was going to give me a lot to think about, and even more to discuss.

I have always maintained my love of a triangle not only because of the forbidden aspect of someone stepping outside the relationship, but more of the exploration of one's emotional capacity, mentally and physically. That has always intrigued me. So many opinions about how you can't love more than one, or you can't fall for someone else if you're truly in love with your GF/BF/Spouse/etc. I love the discussions. I love to debate it, pros and cons. So when I had the opportunity to read this book after seeing it around FB, I knew that I was in for a ride. After reading, the title for this book was perfection in three words - it couldn't be more perfect.

DNF Review for In Peace Lies Havoc by Amo Jones

IN PEACE LIES HAVOC
by AMO JONES

My name is Dove Hendry.
Mine is Kingston Axton.

I was captured by darkness.
She has always been ours…

They groomed me for Midnight Mayhem. Like a trained possession, weak against their control.
She has been conditioned with our blood for years. She just doesn’t know it yet...

But Midnight Mayhem was the stained glass that concealed a very dark culture.
A culture that she is about to become the center of.

The Brothers of Kiznitch come in fours, and they’re not happy about me being hustled into their acts.
Or are we? Careful, Little Bird. A warning is a warning for a reason…

Mind-tricks.
Stunts.
Deceit.
Power.

But there’s something uglier that has been haunting me for years upon years. So ugly that I have never seen its face. I never had to. I’d hear his whispers through my internal screams, feel his shadow brush against my nightmares. He was my the monster that tormented me.
And maybe lived under your bed…

When I started Midnight Mayhem, his presence faded.
His whispers were silenced.
His shadow dissolving without a trace.

I wondered why that was.
She didn’t have to wonder for long…

DNF REVIEW

In Peace Lies Havoc is the first book in the Midnight Mayhem series, which apparently somewhat comes after Manik, but Manik isn't necessary to read, or so we've been told. I didn't get far enough into it to make the connection, or feel lost about a character, but I know there is some mentions of the Mayhem world in Manik and some character mentions, but nothing to take away from the enjoyment. I did recently purchase Manik, so I will check that out and see if it maybe gives me back more of a desire to come back and carry on with this one.

I honestly hate the fact that Amo's words have this sort of power over me - they seriously grab me and make me want to read all her books. In the whole scheme of things, that's the best kind of response to get from a synopsis and obviously I'm poking fun at my own weakness, but her storytelling has been the same in each book I've read. I was hoping for something different and unique with each new storyline. I got that the first time I read her....so unfortunately, this came across as the same. Wash, rinse, repeat. Because, what would normally constitute a DNF from me, what would normally exact eye-rolls from me, has me clinging to the book and making me wonder what in the ever loving hell is going on. I like her brand of crazy, and I've maintained that in the five books I've read of hers - just sadly, I don't like a new story reading the same as another story.

Her books, her words, call to the inner depravity we all possess within our own minds. Morbid curiosity, the adrenaline rush of fear....it's all there and she does it well. I like that side of her. I enjoy that side of her writing. Unfortunately, the similarities to TEK are actually disheartening and maddening. It is NOT truly well-written, again - same crazy word usage I mentioned in my Malum and TEK reviews. Same ridiculous, over the top, extra actions in there. Elaborate, change things up, give me more than the standard WTF that she so easily delivers.

This series and book sounded promising. I can't lie. I won't lie. She writes a synopsis that sucks me right in each and every time. Her covers are absolutely amazing. Hands down, some of the best. I love the darkness she harnesses with her covers. The teasers she posts give an amazing visual to her words, but I'm afraid that's where the love ends for me. I spend more time deciphering plots and actions, more energy focusing on the why instead of what is actually going on, and more mind power questioning the reality of half the stuff I'm reading. I'm trying to sink into a book, not drown in it. I don't want to spend that much energy and will power trying to read a book. It gets tiring.

It's almost as if she gets stuck on certain processing points. The same kind of characters. The same kinds of drama. The same....names? There are twenty six - 26 - two six- letters in the alphabet, and she chooses names that all start with K and D. I can see whyyyyy the Brothers of Kiznitch all have the K name. I get it....I guess. But Delilah and Delia? Why would you do that? Branch out a tad. Don't add to the reader confusion with names that are so similar and start out the same.

There's a reason her voice and stories speak to so many - I can't and won't deny that. She can tell some stories. The main reason I struggle is because of the unnecessary drama, the over the top antics that have no real reason being made into a bigger deal, and the writing itself. Made-up words, inner monologue that is more telling than showing, etc. But, for some reason, I can't look away. It calls to me, but I have to learn to not answer because it's frustrating. But this time, I couldn't look past it and I had to walk away. It got too frustrating this time, and I just didn't have the mentality to deal with the crazy.

I just feel like with her writing, logic doesn't communicate with sanity and it interferes with reality....and that makes it a hard book/story to stomach. It is also a rehash of her Elite Kings. The descriptions and the narrative she uses to describe not only her characters, but their mannerisms and their actions - it's all on repeat and it doesn't read any differently to me than that one did and I only have room in my head for one crazy storyline from an author when there is no variation in her storytelling. If you haven't read TEK, you won't see the similarities and this could be a great book to taste-test her unconventional and intense writing style.

My notes I made while I was reading:

- bold writer but doesn’t articulate well. So while I find myself continually reading her books, it’s hard to not try to read them since she’s a great storyteller.

- Grandiose storytelling, elaborate storyteller

- She’s had 26 letters in the alphabet and everyone seems to have a k name or a d name.

- Gratuitous rape scene. Roiiight. He can tear off her shirt while he has fingers in her and she’s laying down.

- I guess if I’m going to be kidnapped, I’d like it to be all handsome men with masks. (TEK again?)

- But when I have to work too hard to understand a story, it loses its charm.

- She can spoon feed me a story, but she’s rough around the edges with her word usage and everything is over the top and elaborate.

- If you haven’t read TEK, this regurgitated character driven story might interest you. Unfortunately, I’ve already read the seemingly strong girl that gets caught up in a group of guys with other worldly, secret intentions that make no sense. Enjoy!!

- Hodgepodge of circumstances.

Book Review and Giveaway for Release by Aly Martinez

RELEASE
by ALY MARTINEZ

Growing up, Ramsey Stewart branded my soul in ways time could never heal.

At twelve, he asked me to be his girlfriend.
At thirteen, he gave me my first kiss.
By sixteen, we’d fallen in love, planned a future together, and had our eyes set on the horizon.

Love never fails, right?
But for Ramsey, it did.
Love failed him.
I failed him.
The entire world failed him.

At seventeen, Ramsey was convicted of killing the boy who assaulted me.

Move on, he wrote in his first and only letter from prison.
Start a new life, he urged.
I don’t love you anymore, he lied.

There was no such thing as giving up on Ramsey. Love may have been our curse, but he was mine—then, now, and forever.

So here I am, twelve long years later, waiting for a man I don't even know to emerge from between the chain link gates.

REVIEW: 4 STARS
"Sometimes you have to let go of the life you planned in order to live the one you're given."

So, yeah. Aly Martinez had me all up in my feelings again with this one. WAY up. But the two most prevalent ones had me laughing at one point and smiling from ear to ear the next - hilarious anecdotes and deep discussions of the past providing a serious emotional barricade. But that certainly doesn't negate the fact that a twist thrown in there didn't just make me gasp like, "no biggie!"

The rivalry between Ramsey and Thea was easily my favorite part. It added an underlying level of comfort to their friendship. But her anger towards him cracked me up! Typical 10 year olds. Totally. I feel like their innocence and growth from young kids to teenagers was such an organic and natural progression and she really nailed their mannerisms and actions. Ramsey was aggravatingly cute.....his smile in all the wrong times and places were matched by Thea's grumpy self. I loved his smile. I felt like it was addicting too. Again, aggravatingly so. His sarcasm made me smile.

Throughout the entire book, understanding was in the eye of the beholder. Perception was in the all knowing mind of a child. Turnabout was fair play. Given all the happenings in the book that we were privy to, and some that we weren't, it allowed for the emotions to consistently affect me mentally and emotionally. I wanted to MOM these kids, but I wanted to read as they came through on their own volition and made the world theirs. I loved their journey.

The love between Ramsey and Thea was the epitome of being someone’s weakness; their kryptonite. A battle of wills was definitely one for the making with this story. The underlying pain and sense of duty alone was intense and kept me flipping the pages. I needed to know what was going on.....and whyyyy?? I was mentally cataloging all the ways I thought it could go and I was pretty sure I was paying attention to all the clues....and she got me. She really got me. Crazy thing is, I've seen this before but I had NO clue it was coming. I love when a book outcome takes me by surprise.

My reading experience with this one was a lot like watching a man plays video games and his whole body is moving left and right with the controller in his hand, swearing that’s helping him do better in the game. I was like, "No there’s not enough room in his book to hash the rest of this out - oh my gosh - what am I gonna do - holy cow - someone help her -someone help him - someone help ME!!"

I want to point out that Aly Martinez has an excellent way of wrapping up a book and giving me a look at her characters' lives after their story is complete, and this epilogue was no different. I loved how she finished up their story. The crux of the story, however, was an emotionally charged rush of information as I kept turning the pages with anticipation mounting. This is one of those books that while I read it, my breath had a slight hitch in it, but by the time I was done I could breathe a sigh of relief and I could close the book with a smile. this was a feel-good book with plenty of angst for my angst loving heart. This wasn't as heavy as some of her previous other books, but the emotions were on point and the detail was exceptional.

Dammit Aly!!! That twist upset me! But I'll be ok.....soon.

"The sparrows don't come because you need them, Ramsey. They come because they need you."

Series Review for The Elite Kings by Amo Jones

The Silver Swan: Book One

Riddle me this...

“I am neither dead, nor alive, and I’m not something little Madison can hide.
But you will be dead, by the time this is done...
the timer starts now, and the games have just begun…”

Madison Montgomery comes from money and power, but when someone close to her commits the ultimate crime, Madison must live with her tainted name for the rest of her life. When she begins Riverside Preparatory Academy, the private school her father has swept her into in The Hamptons, she hopes for a fresh start. What she wasn't hoping for was the pack of bad boys who run the school; ten, to be exact. When Madison gains the attention of their leader, Bishop Vincent Hayes, a whole new world that she didn't think existed is exposed to her. A whole world that starts and ends with The Elite Kings Club and these boys, are about to flip her world upside down. Secrets are overflowing and family lies are about to be exposed. Is there more to Madison Montgomery than even she knows?

The Broken Puppet: Book Two

"I thought I knew who I was, but I was wrong.”

The Silver Swan
- 1. A girl who is tarnished. Tainted. One who does not fit into the confinement of legend.
The Silver Swan
-2. Madison Montgomery.

I was lied to.
I was cheated.
Resigned to pick up the scraps of empty memories and disarrayed thoughts, I left. After finally cutting the strings of manipulation, I resorted to do what I’ve done since I was a child, something my father drilled into my brain since I could handle my first rifle.
Run.
I’m a mere shadow of the girl they all knew.
Lies and deceit change you. They alter your entire outlook on life.
I’m Madison Montgomery, and I want to play a game.
Here’s what happens when I win.

Riddle me this, Mads.
What goes bump in the night,
but is something you can’t see with sight?
You may run, and you may hide.
If by happily ever after, you mean Bonnie & Clyde.

Tacet a Mortuis: Book Three

Hail to the king, and watch him reign, this game was somewhat fun, until the finale came…

Now we’re here, with carnage and despair, and the only questions left to answer, are the ones that do not appear...

A king loses a war, and a swan sheds her wings, chaos collides with peace, as the crows begin to sing…

Enter if you dare, because I swear the end is near, but nothing is as it seems, and everything is so bare.

So what the f*ck is going on at Riverside,
I think, I think... everyone is about to die....

SERIES REVIEW: 3 Twisted Stars
"Trust no one. Fear no one. Fuck everyone."

EASY: Immediately upon opening this book, I was able to move to the cadence of her words. There was a groove that I fell into while reading. This is my favorite thing to happen when I get to read a new-to-me author. The flow was easy, and that's so hard to find sometimes.

HARD: There was some obvious missteps and sequencing issues/incorrect word usage that came into play with this one, but not too terribly much to halt my overall enjoyment. She was very straight to the point in her writing style; not very flamboyant. She is, however, very generous with her imagination.

EASY: The craziness was insane, but I love that I held on and was able to follow the crazy actions of these kids running the town through a life of debauchery and ridiculousness, which lead to some shock and awe, as well as a nutzo storyline to follow.

HARD: The craziness was a little over the top. So much so that some eye-rolling accompanied the crazy. Maybe enough that I had to suspend reality a bit much.....a bit.

The silver lining (see what I did there?): I couldn't put any of the books in this series down. I went through all three books in ONE week - which is rather fast for me, in general. I definitely enjoyed this series, and the reason I read it was because I had signed up for Malum. Malum was being touted as a standalone, which I can assure you it most definitely is NOT. The buildup to any of the characters and their actions plays a vital role in understanding their dynamic as a whole. She got me good with this series. Not sure how yet, but she did and she did it on the sly.

"I'm chasing the storm, regardless of the danger."

These first three books were cliffies to each other, with a sort of hanging ending after the third book which is supposed to be buttoned up with Sancte Diaboli and Ruined Castles. Sancte Diaboli is Brantley's book - whom we meet in these first three, so I definitely want to check out his story! Next with Ruined Castles, that will button up Madison and Bishop's story as told from their POV - but there is no release date or timeframe given, so we as readers are left hanging at this point.

HINDSIGHT: I loved this boxed set and feel it is perfect for the non-cliffy lover like me, but I am bummed not having a release date for the other two since I've subsequently read and reviewed Malum I /Malum II and need the other's stories ASAP. My personal recommendation about moving into Malum's duet without reading these first three: NO. Don't do it. I can easily recommend this set. I truthfully enjoyed it. But, the first three books build up to the 4th/5th book, so while there really isn't a cliffhanger to Bishop and Madison's love story in this boxed set, the overall theme carries on into this next duet of Nate's story and that's where Bishop and Madison's story becomes a cliffhanger.

I want to call this series "addicting"  -  that's a pretty fitting word. To be honest, it's probably the easiest way to describe the craziness that all these kids engaged in. I did recommend this to many readers because I was high on the adrenaline that was coursing through me while I read it. I will admit in hindsight that this is probably not for everyone because of everything going on, but I will still easily recommend it. I normally don't like a crazy amount of drama, so it surprised me that I really enjoyed this one. There was copious amounts of gratuitous sex with partner swapping to some degree (different levels of acceptability for some), as well as the drugs and drinking. While we all know teens do it, I felt it was unnecessary to the degree that it was all written about. But, this was considered a dark bully read.....so, maybe that's just a personal opinion/preference.

Crazy. Addicting. Bizarre. Insane. Any way you look at it, this series had a pull to it that I haven't encountered in a long time. I could feel the crazy, embrace the drama, and side-eye some actions - all with a smile.

"I now understand the saying blood means nothing, loyalty means everything."
