DNF Review for The Assistant by Marni Mann

THE ASSISTANT
by MARNI MANN

The Assistant, a haunting new romantic thriller.
At forty-two, I’m married to my best friend, and we have two beautiful children.
Everything about my life is perfect until my father gets sick.

Before: I owned and operated a massively successful women’s shapewear company.
After: I stay home with my family because I’ve learned the importance of time.

Before: My husband could rely on me to take care of everything.
After: I hire him the perfect assistant.

My entire life can be summed up in before and afters, but something happens in the middle.
A meeting.
And it changes the course of everyone’s lives forever

REVIEW: DNF

First and foremost, if you are looking for a romance, this is probably NOT it. I cannot tell you how much this was NOT it for me. I feel like the lines may be blurred a little bit on the understanding of what a romance is. Was there romance in it? Yep. Sure was - a heavy, and heart-numbing love, but it was not the romance you were led to believe you were being given. This one was the ultimate book of betrayal and selfishness masked by selflessness and a love that was reserved specifically for a soul mate. I absolutely loved Emery, but I couldn't reconcile what was going on between my mind and my heart, trying to rationalize what Jesse was doing. The secret keeping on every level did not sit well with me either. Not hating. Not mad. Just a bit dismayed at the miscategorization of this book. I am not even sure I would even call it a thriller, but it did have some romance with quite a bit of suspense.

Marni Mann gave me one helluva first read with When Ashes Fall. That book shocked me and took me on a very emotional ride. Her voice was so different and the way that she told of a love that never died, I cried right along with her characters for the harsh reality of what came next. I now know that's what draws me to Mann's writing. She can take a sensitive subject and wrap an emotional story around it - which is exactly what she was doing with this book. I could see that immediately, and the writing was on the wall. Make no mistake, this is a very well written book. She gives a vision not many control freaks would dismiss, so this one took me on a slightly creepy journey. Yes, I did DNF this one, but I did skim the entirety of it and I did read the epilogue. The writing is really good, but it was slow in the beginning and I didn’t particularly like the layout of the story, nor did I honestly care for the storyline itself. I wanted the after more than the before in terms of getting the story, but it was a story full of intrigue. Needless to say, and regardless of my feelings on this one, I will be back for more from her.

This is definitely a case of, it was me and not her. I can easily and comfortably say that. It's not that this was a bad book, because it wasn't. First of all, it deals with a subject that I cannot and will not willingly read and the minute I figured out what was going on (within the first few chapters), I knew this book was not going to work for me. That didn't tamper down my curiosity, because I was most definitely intrigued about where she was going to take it. Unfortunately, it wasn't one I could stomach.

What I'd like to commend Mann on is the fact that she wrote this book that dealt with something that has many different tactical sides to it - all centered around your emotions. You have the sad side and you have the angering side, but you ultimately have the love of a woman that would do anything to make sure her husband, her soulmate, the man of her dreams, was taken care of for as long as she could. Whether he wanted it or not. Knowingly, or not...

Here is the SPOILER GROUP for those that navigated the journey and completed the task. Sadly, it was not one that I was able to do.

HERE IS A GREAT EXCERPT. THIS DELIVERS HER EXCELLENT WORD BUILDING SKILLS AND HER ABILITY TO TELL A STORY.

I breathed through that thought and filled my nose with his scent. There was a constant rotation of different shampoos and soaps in our shower. No matter what he used or the cologne he added after, Emery always smelled like leaves during a spring rainstorm with a hint of spiciness like the cinnamon and nutmeg I’d shaken onto his coffee.

After several deep inhales, I pulled my mouth away, observing how handsome he looked at his desk. He had on a pair of dark jeans and a plaid button-down with a navy sweater on top.

And, even though I couldn’t see them, he had on argyle socks and dark brown leather shoes. I just knew my husband that well.

Emery began to move his chair, swiveling it around to face me. When he stopped in front of me, I stepped between his legs, setting my coffee on his desk so that both of my hands were free. My palms went to his cheeks. I loved the way his whiskers felt on my skin. He kept his beard longer in the winter and trimmed much shorter in the summer. Winter was my favorite, and he had reminded me of one of the reasons after Alicia’s party when he rubbed it across my entire body.

From the look on his face, I had a feeling he was thinking about the same thing. “We have the house all to ourselves today,” he said, confirming my suspicion. His hands slowly slid to the back of my thighs. “When was the last time I was able to do this”—he rubbed his nose across my navel, air from his lips bursting through my top—“on a weekday?” He continued to wrap around until his fingers were on my butt. His lips slowly parted, his eyes fiery with seduction. “I’m going to put you on top of those blueprints, and then I’m going to—”

“You have an interview in fifteen minutes.” I put a finger on his lips. “But I want you to remember the thought you just had, and when the interview is over”—I leaned in a little closer—“I want you to put me on top of those blueprints and do to me whatever it was that you had planned.”

He kissed the back of my finger, and it started to tremble. “You’re turning me on so much; I’m shaking,” I said, pulling my hand away at the same time the doorbell rang. “She’s early. I like that.” I slipped out of his grip and took several steps back. “I’ll go get her, and we’ll meet you in the dining room.”

He nodded, and I walked out of his office, still feeling the tremors as I headed down the rest of the hallway.

REVIEW: 4+ STARS
"We've spent our lives insisting unusual things were normal. Maybe it's time we stopped."

This will go down as one of my favorite duets of the year. The discussions I had with some of my friends that jumped in right after I did were very FLAMBOYANT. I'm pretty sure my comments were pretty theatrical at some point while I was trying to read it and message a friend that had already read it. HAHA!! We were throwing theories around like confetti. There was so much to discuss and plenty to debate. Once again, my favorite part about books. This one was NO different. For the finale in a duet, I am both happy and sad. Happy that I finally got to read more of their journey, but so sad because they are leaving me....just gone. All done. Fin. <sigh> I am pretty sure this empty feeling I have is akin to a book hangover. I really do miss these characters and the angstiness I felt while reading this epic story.

Nick has got to be one of the most amazing male characters I've read all year. I have read some good ones - not gonna lie, but he was amazing. He made me smile. He grabbed ahold of this connection that had no possible reality to it and he ran with it. He felt it. He accepted it. I loved him so much!! And the strength that Quinn possessed was unreal. To be thrust into another life or world, and not understand what could possibly be happening? I mean, you're basically going in blind to another LIFE. This couple was destiny in all the definitions out there. This wasn't really fate to me....it was pure destiny. It was such a neat story to read and I am so glad I took the chance on it. I am so excited to share it with someone, for sure, because I know the discussions will be so animated. There really was so much depth and creativity behind this story that I couldn't help but wrangle a few friends into a discussion after we all read it. Absolutely in love. I cannot say that enough.

But their chemistry together? It was atomic. Undeniably HOT. Like, ridiculously chemical on every level. Argh!! Their love and devotion, their desire, it was insanity squared. Around each other, it was like being caught up in a storm and watching them unhinge. When they were in each other's arms, it was so awesome to see this unabashed affection pour out. That level of temptation between them was so intense and I read with so much fascination at their pull towards one another. They couldn't keep their hands off each other, and I love how that played into their story as well. It wasn't just a connection they couldn't explain, it was an attraction they couldn't deny. It was meant to be.

"Just promise me you'll wait for me. Promise you'll be here when I get home."

The emotions were on point. The love was all consuming. The storyline was addicting. I was 1000% invested in this story and the characters. I'm also very shocked that I have never hear of or read Elizabeth O'Roark before. I feel like I have to blame someone for that....again. HAHAHA!

I feel like I got a very good look at Elizabeth O'Roark's writing style and voice with this duet, and now I have to go through and check out her catalog of books and see what I can squeeze in. She gave me an amazing story, definitely not a normal one, and allowed me to get caught up and fall in love with not only some amazing characters, but a storyline that is just....different. Her imagination astounds me. I love how she was able to infuse so much reality into an otherwise impossible situation, and just ran with it. I am so sad it's over. I loved it!! Gosh, the scenarios that were described and fleshed out, the possibilities, the mind-boggling potential about everything that was presented was insane. My mind was racing, my heart was falling...and to be able to look back on my theories and know how close I was to being right, but also how far off I was is pretty neat to see now.

This book was shaping up and reading like a favorite book. I won't lie and say that this book didn't put me through the wringer, because it honestly did. It wore me out and my heart was tired by the time I was done reading the whole duet - it was intense in some spots, absolutely heartbreaking in others, but overall amazing. But somewhere along the ride, it sort of lost its edge for a bit. Not in a "this story is ruined now" kind of way....but it slowed down and I don't think I was ready for that. But the way O'Roark tied up every string left hanging from the first book, that was awesome. I feel like it's pretty notable how well she introduced some events, allowed me to come up with some theories - viable ones too, and then she explained it all along the way and cleaned them right up! So much going on, but I wasn't left confused about anything and I was intrigued from the first page of the first book until the very end of the last book. I am literally sitting here on my couch, arms extended, telling you....begging you to read this duet.

This entire book, discussing any part of it would be spoilery because of the slow, methodical unravelling, one page at a time. I do know that this entire duet had me completely fascinated for two full days. I read both books in record time - for the Bee, that is. There were spots that I was so excited about the possibilities, or the unfolding of the storyline, that I couldn't sit still. I was a messaging fool while I was reading this one - my poor friends!! I was excited and anxious, wide-eyed and shocked. The whole time I was reading, I wasn't without discovery. I know I always talk about discovery, but that is my favorite part. I want to be taken away. I want to be enamored with characters and taken for a ride with the story - and this duet did that. After reading my first books by Elizabeth O'Roark, I will be back for more for sure.

I just loved it. I absolutely loved it. I really can't complain at all and I already miss Nick and Quinn so much...someone, please hold me.

"You're my life. You're the only part of it I want."

REVIEW: 5 GUTWRENCHING STARS
"It feels like I'm on fire and she's holding the match."

Tummy-Twisting
Emotional
Deep
Heartbreaking
Real
Intense

There are so many words I can use to describe this book, but none of them will come close to actually explaining the emotional impact it had on me. This book was the epitome of YA emotions on CRACK. It was organic. It grew naturally and it moved me. Gosh, it made me follow with half a hitch in my breathing - I was breathing funny!! That buildup, that crescendo that you saw coming but couldn't avoid, and that inevitable ending - I am heartbroken right now. Absolutely broken. I think the best and worst part about this book is that I read it in ONE sitting in ONE day. I am such a slow reader, I don't do that on the regular, but I couldn't put the darn book down. I just couldn't. It was amazing, for the lack of a better word. And the title to this book is so fitting -- oh my gosh, so easily recommended. I cannot tell you that enough. All the good things. All of them.

Ava and Connor will top my favorites list this year. Their circumstances alone were ones that found my heart weighed down with pain, but there was a certain levity in their dispositions too. Their outlook was refreshing even with all the turmoil their lives held. They had humor and wit also, but they had some serious emotions - REAL emotions. I wanted to crawl into the story and hug them both. But what I found fascinating was the amount of emotions that I could connect with not only based on her words, but on the memories she made me 'feel' too. I could remember that feeling of needing to be close to someone. That desire to just kiss and be around someone. That love that if it wasn't reciprocated was the most devastating feeling ever. Oh my gosh, those butterflies you get when you are around the one that sings to your heart. McLean brought me back to 17. She made me remember the pain that comes with a first love, but also the ultimate high that comes with falling in love for the first time. And that first kiss... <sigh>

"He whispers my name as if it's air in his lungs."

YA can be a rough one for me to read because of the fine line between a bratty, spoiled whiner and honest, teenaged emotions. A line between immature and acting from the heart with good intentions, no matter how bad that decision may be. I love that I can read one of McLean's books and know that she has the angst down, she has the emotions well written, and she has the drama TRUE TO THEIR AGE. That's the one thing that sends me over the roof - overly dramatic, teenaged drama, or drama that makes you want to punch the characters. But not this one. Not these characters or this story. It's real drama for a 17 year old. It's real to them and therefore, it's real reactions. I freaking LOVED it.

There are only TWO authors that I willingly jump into their YA books without question, and McLean is one of them. She totally puts into perspective how YA should be written. And honestly, she is actually the reason I started willingly reading YA again. There is a level of maturity to her characters and her books. It's not whiny teenage crap, but it's honest and pure. It's heartbreaking and emotional. I love the way she tells me a story. It's an intimate read, always, and there isn't any question in my mind about the validity of what's going on.

So this is a duet and I may be wallowing by myself in the corner, hugging my knees to my chest. I absolutely loved this one, without a shadow of a doubt. One of the best YA books I've read all year, and easily on my Favorites List for 2019. But now I'm frantic because my heart feels like it's on pause waiting for the second book. I might die. I need someone to check in on me.

I've missed Jay McLean. It's been a while since she has released a book, but don't let that deter you. She came back full force, with a vengeance with this one. It's soooo good. I can't get over how amazing this one was. It's books like these that put the whole genre into perspective for me, and I like knowing where I can go to get a well written, emotional adventure between two hearts and souls that belong to each other. I feel like I want to just spill my emotions without sounding like a fangirl, but then I decided that is not an available option for me right now so please excuse all the gushing.

Confession: I messaged McLean while I was reading this one. Clearly different time zones, but I didn't care. I needed somewhere to vent to, so I told her, and I quote: "You're doing everything I need you to do to obliterate my heart with a love story so pure. Ugh! You're killing me soooo gooood!!!" Because, make no mistake, this book is going to tear up your heart.

"Ava: You're something else."
"Connor: You're something MORE, Ava."

REVIEW: 4+ STARS
"How could a simple touch undo me?"

I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!!!!

Ok, now that I got that out of my system....haha!! I love when a story and an author breaks the mold and gives me a read that soars beyond my hopes and expectations. This story was it. This book, it gave me a sense of calm. That's what came over me while reading this unlikely love story full of mystery and desires. Obviously I crave the angsty, nitty-gritty reads, but apparently I like Catherine Cowles' sweetness too. Who knew?? Add to it, this isn't but it is a rockstar romance - but not like your normal, run of the mill ones. So different on every level playing field, and I enjoyed that immensely!

There is an innocence to Cowles' writing. But it's also the type of giddy and excited that makes me smile bigger and happier when I go to recommend a book like this one -- and I will be recommending this one heartily. Not my normal recommendation for heavy and angsty, but definitely an amazing read. I fell into this one immediately after finishing Beautifully Broken Pieces and her smooth transition from one story to the next was followed with ease. I loved that I could have two completely different storylines, thoroughly intertwined with one another, yet ultimately separate. She touched on the reality of some really harsh and painful subjects, but it wasn't the main focus, and the love story and the growth were. These subjects aren't made light of, not by any means, nor was she disrespectful to the intensity of which these subjects can and should be handled. She made it a vibrant part of the story, however, it was character driven so that made it very enjoyable for me. There wasn't any dwelling in the dramatic or sad parts and I appreciated that greatly.

There is a little bit of a romantic suspense to this series with each book so far, and she carried it right over into this one as well. The drama....? Not my favorite kind - again, but it fit the story. So while it was drama, it wasn't annoying. I read with anticipation, because I needed to know the who and the what and the why and see justice, for sure! I really, really smiled throughout this story watching Liam and Tessa fall in love. The tiptoes around the fear, the handholding around the pain, and the love that grew through an elaborate amount of trust.

"Liam Fairchild was a potent mixture of hard lines and smooth edges."

One thing I think Cowles has in the bag is honest, hardworking, emotionally available men.....I love her men. I love the way she writes them. I love the stories they have to tell. I love the way they treat their women. <sigh> I am just in love. Their patience is of a different breed. Their kindness knows no bounds. Their hearts go above and beyond and their women suffer from nothing but overbearing (in all the right ways) love. I love the visual she gave me, as well as the mentality of them. We have some good men out here in Oregon and "seeing" them in this story just made me smile and be proud. Not quite country, not quite big city. Love it! This story was soooo easy to connect to - gosh, I loved it!!

Does this mean I am turning into a softy? No way. Nuh uh. Can't do it. I need the grit and the turmoil. I like the stomach twisting angst and the headiness that comes with it. I won't lie and say that this is my favorite trope, because it's not. But I will say that this is how I venture into tropes and storylines and new authors - it's when I find an author that can write some specific way and I connect with it. Catherine Cowles is that sweet writer that I can easily connect with her stories and have fallen in love with her. So now I will have to follow her around like a lovesick puppy. #FairWarning

This Sutter Lake Series does carry over many of the characters from Further To Fall, and I reviewed that one HERE. I said in that review how much I loved Cowles' voice, and it's just gotten stronger and stronger with each subsequent book I read. I can officially say I've read ALL her books now. HA! I know...it's only three books, but what a way to start. The excitement I am feeling about the next story has me all giddy!!! Tuck's story in Beautifully Broken Spirit will be an emotional one. This will go live on October 22, 2019. I cannot wait!!! Bring it on!

"He seemed to be a master of gentle pressure. Enough to encourage me out of my comfort zone, but not so much that I felt bullied."

Book Review and Giveaway for Violent Ends by Jessica Hawkins

VIOLENT ENDS
by JESSICA HAWKINS

I had a life, love, and future to give.
Until my enemy took a wife.

The devil has a name, and it’s Cristiano de la Rosa. On my wedding day, he was the last man I expected to see standing at the altar. He wants to make me his queen. His brother wants to rescue his princess.

Getting Cristiano to lose control becomes the name of the game, and the stakes are life and death. But as truth and lies blur, loyalty is tested, and our chemistry threatens to reach the melting point, the prize grows less clear. Either freedom no longer means what I think it does, or Cristiano is as devious as everyone says, and he’s mastered the art of playing my mind.

All I know for certain is that nothing is certain. And all you need to know? This is a love story.

But even love stories have to end.

REVIEW: 4.5 STARS
"Don't deny me, Natalia. You want this. I need it."

I love it when a book makes me gasp at the end!!! OMGosh, if this one didn't perfectly set up the ultimate cliffhanger for the third book, Violent Triumphs, I don't know what could have. This book was Jessica Hawkins in her element. With intrigue and forbidden, mixed with an intense hero and a heroine you want to shake, this whole setup is everything I crave from her. I read this book with fervor and fascination. I loved the first book, but this one was so much more for me in terms of the growth of their characters and the sizzling intensity between Cristiano and Natalia. But not only that, Natalia's understanding of Diego's devious and destructive side - and I won't lie and say that I was heartbroken about it. I hate Diego with the power of a thousand suns, so to see her understanding his asshole-ish ways, I was happy. HAHAHA!

I think one of the sexiest parts of this book is Cristiano's mouth.....woah. I mean, seriously WOAH. I loved how dominant he was, but there was a certain tenderness to his demeanor as well. He’s naughty but so protective. He’s brutal but so tender. He is perfection, in all realities. His patience is tested repeatedly, yet he doesn't lose his cool and to me, that is something that I cannot get over. Like, it makes him amazing to me in every aspect. I am pretty sure I would have wanted to strangle Natalia a few times....yet, he has the patience of a saint (he is NO saint, for the record). Now, having said that - I honestly think that speaks to his strength and his confidence, and nothing is sexier than a confident man. Nothing.

"What the idle mind conceives is far worse than what I can do."

I did struggle with Natalia more in this book than I did the first one. Not so much that my rating would change - because it's obviously who she is, but it definitely left me wanting to shake her pretty damn hard. What was right in front of her face was sidestepped by her inability to see the whole story. It was - Right. In front. Of her damn. Face. Normally that would make me rant, but I had to take into consideration her age. I also needed to see it from her side, and Jessica did a good job at setting up her stubbornness and my anger issues. I won't pretend to say I love her, because I don't, but I am in love with her stubborn side. I love a good stubborn woman and the man that breaks her with his love and devotion, and that's what I am here for. Cristiano is devoted to her and that side of him is so damn sexy. Ugh!! I want more of him!

Favorite Character: Cristiano was articulate and very determined, but with that came a very calculated test of wits. As frustrating as it was, the talking in circles made me smile because it was a well choreographed dance between two people that were equally strong willed but they were both intrigued by the other. In different ways, yet all the same. This book excited me for more to come.

This is going to be a long five months, I won't lie. That cliffhanger set my heart back a few years. I know that I have my own assumptions about what is happening and who is behind it all, but the wait will be a test of my will and patience. I am anxious to get Cristiano's side of this and Diego's comeuppance, but also Natalia's awakening. There is so much I am holding out hope for, but knowing this one did everything I needed it to makes me settle in for the wait with a little more confidence. One thing that I wish I could stress to many readers would be that even though there is a wait with Jessica's books, her stories are well-plotted and exceptionally well-written, and with the depth she gives them, there is no way I can forget any part of the storyline. I love that about her series. I have always been able to jump back in with eagerness and have never had to "remember" things or re-read the last few pages of the book before starting the next. Her writing is amazing to me, and this book just reminded me why she is a favorite author of mine.

I am excited to see where this goes. I need to know how this all.....'gets fixed' in the final book. I need to know.

"Revenge and closure. Those two things could tempt the devil."
